SEIU to split endorsement amongst locals.
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1007/SEIU_to_split_endorsement.html

"As I suggested yesterday, the SEIU is letting each of its constituent unions make its own endorsement. That diffuses internal union tensions, but also diminishes the political muscle of the most important player in "new labor," and it's a severe disappointment to the Edwards campaign."

Edwards really, really, really wanted this endorsement. Clinton and especially Obama win with the block.

1. Are they the union that endorsed Dean last time?
Maybe they're just skittish about backing someone early on and then having to "re-endorse." If that is the case, maybe they'll change their minds later on (?).

2. Edwards was chasing their endorsement HARD.
Big key: IL SEIU will throw in with Obama. That's a lot of resources right on the Iowa border.

3. That's disconcerting ... Talk about triangulation
That seems to be the way the "game" gets played these days, even with the union brethren. A real shame ... Edwards could have used the momentum of that endorsement.

4. From what I've read in the past few weeks
The SEIU leadership really did want Edwards, but there were preferences for Obama or Clinton in the membership from place to place and they weren't able to be convinced. This weakens the endorsements all around, but it's better for Clinton and Obama, obviously.
