Their recent condemnation of moveon.org seems to indicate, YES. Yes I know that they didn’t all vote to condemn moveon.org, but the silence of those that didn’t speaks volumes.
Seems to me that moveon.org represents a movement of average citizens that feel disenfranchised with the Democratic Party. These citizens are told by their Parties that they have the power because they can vote. If that were so, then why do we have so much happening in government that the people don’t like? For example: approx 70% of Democrats want King George and Emperor Cheney impeached, but we are told, not so politely, that impeachment is “off the table”. Wait, I thought we ran the Party. Apparently not.
The people thought that in 2006 they could effect what our government does by replacing republicans with Democrats. According to polls, the people are terribly disappointed with the results. I am thinking that the Democrats that got elected aren’t representing those that elected them. Now why is that? And does that have anything to do with the growth of organizations like moveon.org?
Here’s my opinion, it’s free and worth every penny. The Democratic Party is a machine, not as well oiled as the republican party machine, but a machine none the less. That isn’t necessarily bad. And many in the machine are working hard for democracy and are well meaning. But there are those that are only involved for their own ends and not interested in fighting tyranny. My experience is that when you go to the machine and say that our representative is not representing good Democratic principles and needs to be replaced, the response you get is laughter in your face. “What, you want to replace an incumbent? Our incumbent is guaranteed to win.” But, you say, if they don’t represent us, shouldn’t we replace them? “Understand that winning the general is the goal. Having good representation is not.” This made me think, how often does a Party replace their own incumbent? Ah, ah, don’t throw Lieberman at me. It wasn’t the Party that wanted him replaced. In fact the Democratic Party supported him even after the citizens made it clear they didn’t. And you know the results, the citizens were screwed.
Forgive me if I go on, and I tend to do that. I was recently at a meeting of citizens in favor of impeachment. They were pushing a petition for impeachment to be presented to our Representative to the HOR, a long time Democrat. They stated that the Representative would pay attention because we are all voters and could replace him if we wanted. I pointed out that we can’t replace him unless there is a replacement that the local and state Democratic Party endorsed. There happened to be a representative of the local county Democratic Party present. When asked how the county party felt about impeachment, the representative stated that it hadn’t been discussed. Well over half of the Democrats want impeachment, but it isn’t even discussed by the local machine.
My point, and forgive the length, is that as citizens we have very little power. The Democratic Party knows that because of the “worst of evils” principle, we will vote for a Democrat over a Republican. Therefore, when I write my Democratic Representative or Senator and express my views, they don’t have to pay attention and they often don’t. They are comfortable that I can not vote against them unless I am willing to vote for a Republican. Democratic incumbents can not be replaced by Democrats. To be effective we must get into the machine. To have any power at all we have to take over the machine.
If the Democratic Party refuses to impeach then I guess we will have to wait for the tea party.
