Wal-Mart Rumors

I get emails from Republican friends. They gig me about my politics, I call Bush the ultimate dumbass. I win. No harm no foul.

Late last night I got an email saying that Hillary Clinton had served on Wal-Mart's board of directors for 6 years. And the corporate law firm she worked for represented them as a client. And the usual, blah, blah, blah.

I did a brief Google search but, as I said, it was late and I wasn't going to spend all night Googling. So I couldn't find a solid source for that particular factoid. Any supporters or detractors have a solid link to any substantial sites?

I googled "clinton, wal-mart" and came up with many hits.

She was on WalMart's board for several years.

Why are they taking about this? Do your friends think this is a bad thing?

they think liberals hate Walmart so they're trying to drive another wedge into the left using Walmart.

It's the: How can you real liberals support somebody who:

-supported bankruptcy reform
-supports free trade
-supports expanding visas to outsource jobs
-has been featured on the cover of Fortune magazine
-has a private, for-profit insurance solution to healthcare
-is receiving the MOST health care-industry donations of any of the candidates.
-works closely with Newt Gingrich to promote their Health Care Legislation package. Newt talked up the candidacy 2 weeks ago on Meet the Press
- is still pushing the failed Republican plan to establish federally supported 401k retirement funds as a supplemental pension program for low and moderate income citizens.
-has support among both Republican and Democratic voters
-Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch tacitly endorsed the candidacy by hosting a fund raiser
-is the top money recipient from Lobbyist, Health Care Industry and Retirees.
-is in the top 3 in funds from: Tobacco, Pharma, Lawyers, Telephone, Securities and Investments, Computer/Internet


Now I only get these about Hillary. I haven't come out in support of one runner or another and my friends know this. Somehow, though, it's always Hillary.

Debating real issues is productive....but attacking a candidate for a magazine cover? (it was Fortune right?...not "Soldier of Fortune?") And of course "real liberals" wouldn't support anyone who's successful at fund raising or could draw Republican votes. (We don't need no stinkin' Republican votes.)
The failed Republican plan was to replace social security with private accounts. How is federal support for 401k's for low and moderate income citizens not a "liberal" idea?
.....and you don't need to expand visas to outsource jobs. Outsourced jobs are filled by people outside this country- they don't need visas.
I consider myself a liberal and not one of your points would keep me from supporting a candidate.

You can't just spit out keywords and expect to change anyone's mind (Walmart! Fox News! Rupert Murdoch! Newt Gingrich! Health Insurance!) That only works for Bush's 29% on the other side.

I already knew Hillary was on the cover of Fortune Magazine. I also knew she was a corporate lawyer. As I recall, she kept working while Bill as governor.

However, I did not realize she was on the board of Wal-Mart for 6 years. When I tried to Google the information late last night I kept coming up with snipey right-wing sites with no real substantiation.

I was asking for some clarification and, in the post you "reacted" to, pointing out that some of my more moderate Republican friends find it amusing that the same things I have been bitching about all these years, are embodied in the current front-runner for the Democrats.

I could give a rat's ass who you support and for what reasons (that goes for anybody else on the site for that matter). That was not my intent in posting the OP or in the later responses. People will go with the person they want. I don't have an issue with that.

As far as I can tell, all 3 front-runners too far right for my tastes. However, I don't get a say in who gets nominated. All I can do after that is to vote my conscious.

And I expect you will do the same.

But this is something Hillary USED TO DO. Unless she is on the board NOW I see no reason for this to be a reason I would oppose her candidacy.

And really, there are enough reasons already :)

but Hillary WAS representing the state of Arkansas at the time. WalMart was a major source of jobs and revenue for a very poor state. I can't judge a candidate by one issue alone. If I did, I'd eliminate them all. In Hillary's case though, there are a lot of issues that trouble me.

actually, Wal-Mart made me a Socialist, if you get technical. Class-action lawsuit is working its way through the legal system as we speak.

Gee you mean it is wrong for Hillary Clinton to be on the board years ago, and it is OK for Michelle Obama to be on the board a lot more recently? After the furor she resigned.

Isn't it ridiculous to try to start another flame. When it was posted about Hillary with the Obama supporters first started flaming her here. That is til someone posted about Michelle Obama being on the Wal Mart board. ...tsk tsk...hosted on their own petard.

They are an independent supplier; Wal-Mart is their biggest customer. Michelle Obama was never anywhere near the board of Wal-Mart.

And frankly I have a life. I pop on, read what I can, then get some work done. No time for inconsequential sniping. They will nominate who they nominate. I don't believe I get a say in that.

As I suggested upthread: The front-runners are all too far right for my tastes. I like things about each of them and dislike things about each of them. Nobody has really come out and explained any substantial differences. (I've asked in GD and was directed to a issues site, which pretty much confirmed it) And I haven't been able to discern any on my own.

Overall I agree with the trending in the polls: Any one of the top 3 could take any one of the Republican field with one paw tied behind their backs.
