Now, afterward, there were various reports saying Suha had said during her speech that the JEWS were POISONING PALESTINIAN CHILDREN. (Even the original Wikipedia article said Suha said that.) Jews were immediately outraged by Suha's speech because this had shades of the medieval Christian blood libels against Jews, in which Christians in the Middle Ages claimed Jews were poisoning Christians and using the blood of Christian children in the making of Passover matzah bread, in order to foment pogroms to slaughter Jews. (Kosher law, of course, forbids consuming blood.) But Hillary is hugging and smooching Suha right after that speech.

The real question is whether we are in trouble if Hillary is nominated and whether the GOP will use these photos against her. The issue is not whether YOU care. The issue is whether Hillary can survive this skeleton in her closet and whether, therefore, she is the best we can nominate. The GOP knows exactly how to push the buttons of millions of Americans who, for better or worse, do care about this sort of thing.

In 1972 George McGovern picked Senator Thomas Eagleton as his running mate. He was truly a fine man. But it came out that he had had in the past electroshock treatments. McGovern was forced to replace him as his running mate. It was a huge embarrassment to have to replace him after the convention was over. This was one of the things (along with Watergate) that did in McGovern's campaign.

Now, electroshock treatments permanently erase some short-term (recent) memory but not long-term memory. Everything he had learned in life, in the Senate, in college, growing up, Eagleton still knew. The electroshock treatments probably did not make Eagleton unqualified. But the whole thing sounded so bizarre to the public that the issue was absolutely ruinous to the campaign.

If there are skeletons in a candidate's closet, whether we personally care about them or not, we need to know now, not after the nomination.

Jewish voters in NY are as atuned to concerns about sucking up to terrorists as anyone. And yet, in 2006, they supported clinton by a margin of 86 to 12 percent. When every Jewish leader stands up and defends clinton if the repubs make an issue of this, how well is that going to play?

Is that faint praise for her? With Hillary's high negatives and her energizing the GOP base, she will need more than 75 percent of the Jewish vote. Nationally, Democrats often do much better than 75 percent of the Jewish vote.

The GOP knows how to harp on something people don't want to think about. They will rub it in.

Moreover, Senator Chuck Schumer had to reassure Jewish voters in New York that Hillary "will (future tense) be pro-Israel," because many Jews were worried. Many Jews have forgiven Hillary, but do you think people, including many non-Jews, will be as forgiving in the Midwest and in many other parts of the country when the GOP goes on the attack? There will also be Jews outside of New York who were not as aware of those photos. Even if many Jews refuse to vote GOP, if they are harangued by the GOP with TV ads about this, it could depress Jewish turnout nationally, and that could be a problem in states like Florida and elsewhere, such as Pennsylvania. But the attacks, and GOP TV ads with those photos, won't just target Jewish voters. They will be aimed at upsetting many non-Jewish voters as well.

Perhaps you aren't aware that GOP apparatchik Lee Atwater spread rumors that the GOP had photos of Michael Dukakis' wife burning the American flag years previously. This actually did Dukakis a lot of damage even though it was years earlier and even though no photos were ever shown.

Regardless of when it happened, imagine the GOP in the post-911 era trotting out real photos of Hillary kissing the wife of a terrorist. Not a rumor. Imagine the GOP actually showing those photos in ads on TV.

And incidentally, I was very much involved in getting Al D'Amato out of office. If you haven't seen him at work, you don't know what a GOP attack machine is really like. He terrorized New Yorkers. Literally. The whole state was afraid of him. Politically he MAULED people. He was a fascist. He went around confiscating other people's microphones.
