"Turnout is steady today at polling spots in the Lowell area as Democrat Niki Tsongas and Republican Jim Ogonowski spend the final hours of their grueling congressional campaign shaking hands and drumming up support.

At Andover High School, a line of traffic streamed into the parking lot as voters hit the polls. Andover has historically been a Republican stronghold in the district and was the hometown of former U.S. Rep. Paul Cronin, the last GOP congressman from the 5th District.

Polls have shown the race to replace former U.S. Rep. Martin Meehan tightening in its final days as Ogonowski has tried to compensate for a lack of funding by relentlessly burning up shoe leather in the sprawling district. Ogonowski is the brother of American Airlines pilot Capt. John Ogonowski, who was killed when Flight 11 was hijacked by terrorist on Sept. 11 and flown into the World Trade Center."

3. Interesting fact, (to kick the thread)
Cronin the last Republican won in a very dirty race where Colson was involved. The candidate who was the victim of that nasty attack - the current Jr Senator, who the WH sought to destroy.

He did some phone banking yesterday for Niki - and brought donuts.

5. Chuck Colson was the head of Nixon's dirty tricks
He was one of the people indicted, found quilty and sent to prison in Watergate. In prison, he "found God". When he came out he apologized to many people - but he clearly wasn't all that reformed or he would have made a point to speak out on John O'Neil, who he recruited in 1971 so Nixon could have a vet on his side to smear Kerry.
