New York Observer: Rudy’s Doin’ It!
Battle Stations! Shocked Cacophony Among New York Democrats That Rudy They Know May Actually Become Republican Candidate
by Jason Horowitz

(Philip Burke)

It’s the middle of October and Rudy Giuliani is still leading the race for the Republican nomination. His old enemies in New York can’t understand it. “It’s totally unbelievable,” said Charles Rangel, the dean of the New York Congressional delegation and a longtime adversary of Mr. Giuliani. “I refuse to believe that this could possibly happen to our country. I have too much confidence in our country to believe that this could really happen.”

All presidential candidates have some element of hometown opposition—constituents angry about a factory closing, politicians spiteful about losing a bill or an election. But no candidate engenders as much local animus as Mr. Giuliani, whose terms as mayor were characterized by a series of spectacular running battles with various, mostly liberal constituencies.

For the first months of his candidacy for president, prominent progressives in New York mocked the notion that a pro-choice, immigration-friendly serial husband with a history of opposition to guns would have a shot at the Republican nomination. But now, with Mr. Giuliani up nearly 10 percentage points in national polls and unexpectedly competitive in the early primary states of New Hampshire and South Carolina, a mixture of nervousness and disbelief is running through the ranks of his old antagonists.

“People say, ‘Still?’” said Mark Green, a former New York City public advocate and persistent foil to Mr. Giuliani. “If the other 49 (states) knew what we knew, he wouldn’t be in the ballpark, much less winning the game.”

Norman Siegel, who served as the director of the New York Civil Liberties Union during Mr. Giuliani’s tenure as mayor, said, “I’ve been saying to people in New York, especially the liberal community that I’m proud to be part of, that unless the truth is revealed about the real Rudy, he could win, and not just the Republican nomination, but the presidency as well. Most people in New York look at me, and they say ‘no way.’ They say it can’t happen. The political leadership in New York is underestimating him. They are really in political denial. I say to people, ‘You better wake up.’”...

1. Starting to feel dangerously real now, isn't it? My hopes are dwindling, but
I'm still thinking that his crazy-ass cross-eyed Tiara Princess will be so appallingly unacceptable as First Lady that voters will come to their senses in time.

Let's not forget how much his children love him.

Now, if Judi could get pregnant...I could see possibilities. Does she do things like that?

15. wow really? not me, i'm a cynical optimist and to get totally shallow for minute---
Rudy is really unattractive, that couples with his authoritarian streak and his love of Bush policies will sink him imo.

16. Think like a GOPer--you're not being shallow enough--
his weaselly beady eyes, toothy snarly grin, and rude, authoritarian abrasiveness is what REDEEMS him in Republican eyes--they want a nasty street-fighter that will stand up to the "Islamofascists" that make them wet their pants in fear. They want a ruthless bastard who will get rid of America's symbolic subway-pissers and squeegee men, like he did in NYC with the real ones.

3. In a normal election it would not be possible.
But only the dregs of the Republican Party (I assume these are the dregs) are willing to take the forlorn hope and run in this election.

I mean, LOOK AT THEIR CHOICES! Rudy, at least, they think, did one thing right for one whole day. Maybe even a week. Maybe as much as two weeks. THAT'S THE BEST THEY HAVE.

My respects to Norman Siegel, but Rudy can't carry New York. As for the rest of the country...His choice of VEEP would have to be spectacular. Pat Robertson, maybe?

And I so want to see Judi Nathan on tour.

5. Just wait until the GOPers find out where he stands on abortion, gay rights, gun control
Every right-winger I know seems to only care about 4 things: lower taxes, make abortion illegal, stop the "homosexual agenda," and no gun control. Polls show that most GOPers don't know where Rudy stands on those issues. I think that once they find out, they will not be happy about voting for him. I think a conservative 3rd party candidate will be a reality and take votes away from Rudy.

11. Honestly, I think most GOPers know, despite the clueless poll responders--
and yet his numbers go up. Rudy is a test case for the neocons' viablility as a political force. And apparently, pronouncements of the neocons' demise were premature.

19. And do McCain, Romney, Thompson etc. have enough $$$?
I sort of wish the other pugs were doing better with $$$ because attitudes formed by primary smear campaigns carry over to the general. (And everyone sees the ads, not just pug primary voters.)
