Dodd Puts Hold On FISA Bill- My Candidate For 08 Is Chosen.
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 02:27 PM by cryingshame
And all the DU'ers kvetching about the FISA capitulation need to consider sending Dodd $10.

Dodd puts a hold on FISA bill, sign his petition

The Military Commissions Act. Warrantless wiretapping. Shredding of Habeas Corpus. Torture. Extraordinary Rendition. Secret Prisons.

No more.

I have decided to place a "hold" on the latest FISA bill that would have included amnesty for telecommunications companies that enabled the President's assault on the Constitution by illegaly providing personal information on their customers without judicial authorization.

I said that I would do everything I could to stop this bill from passing, and I have.

It's about delivering results -- and as I've said before, the FIRST thing I will do after being sworn into office is restore the Constitution. But we shouldn't have to wait until then to prevent the further erosion of our country's most treasured document. That's why I am stopping this bill today.

8. Chris Dodd is the guy who gave us HAVA in the first place...
The garbage bill that forced electronic voting machines down our throats just in time for 2004.

Look a little closer - you may not like what you find.

12. HAVA addressed irregularities. I've posted what HAVA mandates below. Don't blame Dodd for
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 03:16 PM by cryingshame
the malfeasance of others.

Senator Dodd was one of the principal Senate authors of the HAVA legislation enacted in response to the numerous voting irregularities that arose in the 2000 presidential elections. Those problems included malfunctioning and inaccessible machines, spoiled ballots that could not be counted, inaccurate voting lists, and barriers to the polling place. HAVA addressed those problems by establishing minimum Federal requirements that all states must meet for Federal elections, beginning this year.

HAVA requires that by this year, states must meet standards for voting systems used in Federal elections. Those standards include allowing a voter to verify the ballot before it is cast and counted, and entitle a voter to change or correct a ballot, including the right to receive a new ballot if necessary, before the ballot is cast. Voting systems must also notify the voter if more than one candidate is selected for a single office, and provide a permanent paper record with a manual audit capacity. HAVA also requires that voting systems be accessible to the disabled, including the blind, and provide an opportunity for the disabled to independently cast a private ballot.

"HAVA did not require a one-size-fits-all approach to election reform," Dodd noted. "The law left it to the states to decide which voting system would best meet the needs of its citizens. Secretary Byciewicz's choice of an optical scan system, along with a vote-by-phone system for the disabled, ensures the accuracy, accessibility and security of the voting process for all Connecticut citizens, consistent with both Federal and State requirements. She is to be commended for reaching out to voters in the State and seeking input from the disabled community and others on this choice."

16. Yes, and our SOS in CT did work very hard at finding a system
that would work.

We tried some others that were rejected, because she heard from computer specialists pointing out their flaws.

HAVA isn't the problem -- remember 2000 and hanging chads? That was the sort of nonsense it was created to fix. Of course, there are evil people out there bent on stealing elections. They just learned to work the new system.

25. woah. hava addresses problems created by republicans (hanging chads) in order
to pass hava, to install direct recording devices across our country, in order to steal elections.

so I don't think it is very accurate to say hava addressed problems. It addresses non-existent problems, and created election theft on a mass scale.

having said that Senator Dodd did a heroic and really important thing today! If all our dems took real dem positions like this one, the world would be so much better.

27. Your logic is broken. HAVA didn't create election theft, GOP'ers wanting to steal elections did
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 08:02 PM by cryingshame
and HAVA most certainly did address problems that occured in 2000.

The problem is that no matter what election system we come up with, it's very difficult to prevent corrupt people to take advantage.

Especially since, during any election, time is not on the side of election fraud victims.

28. Dan Rather did an expose on the 2000 election. It is available to see on the web, just
google Dan Rather.
The entire hanging chad circus was orchestrated by the republicans. It was a fake. They used bad paper, made it happen.
It has all been proven already. whistleblowers came forward. Dan Rather went to the paper mills. Discarded paper which could not be used, was used, on purpose. He found the company.
Hava was a reaction to the hanging chads which were a fake.
The same company who did that (which is already election fraud; they made the election not work), was ready in the wings to make the new voting machines.

The difference between fraud with ballots and with voting machines, is that with electronic machines you can hack millions of votes at once, then erase what you have done, so no-one can ever find it.

And the creator of HAVA, MR Bob NEi, is currently in jail for fraud.

29. One more time- HAVA created standards dictating the points listed below NONE OF WHICH
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 09:18 PM by cryingshame
can be remotely considered inappropriate, unwarranted or unhelpful.

And Florida is NOT the only case where ballots end up with more than one candidate chosen or the wrong candidate chosen by mistake.

I've been following election fraud for years, so there was no need to point out Rather's piece.

Frankly, I don't think you know how to tell the difference between what's actually in HAVA and mandated by it and what happened because some corrupt GOP'ers were ready to abuse yet another system.

Please note the points I've bolded and be sure to focus on point #4.

HAVA was a good start towards election reform. It's not Dodd's fault the GOP will abuse and subvert ANY system to steal elections.

-voter to verify the ballot before it is cast and counted
-entitle a voter to change or correct a ballot, including the right to receive a new ballot if necessary, before the ballot is cast
-Voting systems must also notify the voter if more than one candidate is selected for a single office
-provide a permanent paper record with a manual audit capacity
-be accessible to the disabled, including the blind, and provide an opportunity for the disabled to independently cast a private ballot

23. Obama's on board!
From his press release:

“I have consistently opposed this Administration's efforts to use debates about our national security to expand its own power, whether that was on the Iraq war, or on its power grab to curb our civil liberties through domestic surveillance programs. It is time to restore oversight and accountability in the FISA program, and this proposal -- with an unprecedented grant of retroactive immunity -- is not the place to start.”
