Poll question: In light of the gospel concert story, have you ever been to a gospel concert?
One thing I would do when living in the Bay area a while back was to go to the Glide Memorial concerts (www.glide.org/) with Cecil Williams in the Tenderloin for a day of helping out homeless and going to the wildly fun gospel service.

When going to the New Orleans Jazz Fest, one of the first things you do is check out the Gospel tent (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5367455).

As a semi-agnostic pseudo-Taoist, I know what I'm stepping into with a gospel concert.

Has anyone else ever attended a gospel concert?

3. Anything related in any tangential way to you know what
will bring in the "Obama is Satan's and Fred Phelps's love child" crowd.

4. For one summer, I lived next door to an African-American church
It was like having a gospel concert twice a day on those hot Sunday afternoons when both we and they had our windows open.

7. That must have been pretty cool...
...even on a hot afternoon.

When I lived in New Orleans, not only would there be all kinds of free music performed just about anywhere you were, but some of the most amazing music coming out of old crumbling churches from poor African-American participants really made you want them to find hope in song.

9. It was great

I used to lie on the couch by the open window on the church side of the apartment building on Sunday evenings, reading the Sunday New York Times and grooving to the music.

(Ironically, the church I attended at the time was high-church Episcopal, which had its own entirely different type of coolness.)

Also, one of the best choral concerts I heard in recent years was the Soweto Gospel Choir from South Africa. They sang not only familiar gospel numbers but also traditional and political music. ALL, and I do mean ALL the singers were soloist quality, which is unusual. I know because every single one of the choir members took a turn as soloist.

6. Does this count?
One night many years ago I was in a gay bar in Charleston. From behind the stage emerged 10-11 black men in choir robes. They sang (actually sang) a couple of rip roarin' gospel numbers.

Then they threw off their robes (all were done up to the nines in beautiful dresses) and they did several regular drag numbers. It was the most memorable and the funniest drag show I have ever seen.

Does that count?

P.S. One of the performers told me that they had to get the choir robes back to a local church (several of them sing in the choir) before anyone realized they had been borrowed.

10. I am not close to being ready to die.
However, my close friends know that I want a gospel choir to sign out at my memorial service. I am not kidding.

I am agnostic so it isn't about helping with a transition - its about the celebration.

11. No, But I did get thrown out of Jimmy's Bar in Hyde Park Chicago for singing Luther's hymns...
(Most of Luther's hymns, written in the 1500's were drinking songs before he changed the words)....
