Who is your dream President? (living or dead)
Mine is Barbara Jordan.

The world would be a very different place had there been a Mme. President Barbara Jordan.

and had really grown in his views and philosophy when he ran in 68. I have long wondered what would have happened with him in the WH. Surely things would be so different.

As for as instinctively progressive Presidents, I'm not sure how any could surpass FDR....not perfect, certainly (think Japanese internment, for example, but amazing what he was able to accomplish, given the challenges)

The man had such integrity. This would have been a much better country with a President Paul Wellstone.

Actaully, another dream President would have been Illinois' GREAT Senator, the late Paul Simon. Another sterling man of intergrity.

15. Rep Mo Udall, one of the greatest presidents America never had...
Edited on Fri Oct-26-07 06:25 PM by Rowdyboy

He was my hero in college (1972-76) and for the decade following. He narrowly lost a race for speaker of the house, then later lost the Democratic nomination to Jimmy Carter.

Morris King Udall was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1961. He served as chairman of what is now the Committee on Resources for over ten years. As well as serving in the House of Representatives for three decades, Udall ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976.

Although Udall lost his right eye in an accident at age 6, he became co-captain of his high school basketball team, quarterback for the football team, trumpet player in the school band, student body president and salutatorian. After earning a law degree at the University of Arizona, he obtained an airplane pilot license, played professional basketball for the Denver Nuggets and, after scoring highest on the state bar exam, was admitted to the Arizona Bar and began practicing law with his brother Stewart.

Udall was one of the most creative and productive legislators of the 20th Century. He championed the rights of Native Americans and Alaska Natives and used his leadership in Congress to strengthen tribal self-governance. His love of the environment resulted in numerous pieces of legislation moving through Congress. Chief among his accomplishments was the Alaska Lands Act of 1980, which doubled the size of the national park system, and tripled the size of the national wilderness system. He also authored important legislation on campaign reform and Congressional ethics.

49. We need a combo of Washington, Lincoln and FDR right now.
The force-that-could-not-be-resisted who set the precedents (we need new ones), Lincoln who held the place together, and Franklin Roosevelt who inspired and led during the depression and WWII.

I might add a little Teddy Roosevelt (trust busting, environmentalism and pugnaciousness) and Al Gore (environmentalism and technology) on the side.

We're in a heap of trouble, and need the strengths of all of them.

Of the ones I've voted for: Al Gore and Walter Mondale (fiscal sanity and midwestern pragmatism).

In my lifetime in the mix: Dwight Eisenhower, who warned us of the military-industrial complex.

55. If I think conventionally, I'd say Robert Kennedy, but
I think a real dream come true would have been Shirley Chisholm. She would have done so much for women, minorities, and the poor. Of course, she'd probably have been killed just because of that. I don't really think a President who truly would shake up the establishment can survive a term in office without being done in.
