Oh....it is Warner v. Gilmore in Virginia

Warner, Gilmore likely to face off
Davis' choice not to run for Senate sets up battle between ex-governors

Friday, Oct 26, 2007 - 12:09 AM

http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2007-10-26-0186.html

A matchup between two former governors appears likely after 11th District Rep. Thomas M. Davis III withdrew his name yesterday from the 2008 U.S. Senate race.

While former Republican Gov. Jim Gilmore did not formally announce his candidacy yesterday, aides indicated he would do so after the Nov. 6 General Assembly elections.

Former Gov. Mark R. Warner, a Democrat who succeeded Gilmore in the Executive Mansion, already has announced.

While Gilmore starts as a big underdog, the withdrawal of Davis will help the Republican candidate by avoiding a nominating fight, Farnsworth said.

Warner left office in 2006 with a popularity rating in the high 70s. He is worth an estimated $200 million, so he can finance his own campaign.

1. I hear Davis is considering not running for reelection...
Which I think might be more likely after his wife gets stomped by Chap Peterson next month...

2. Hahaha! Oh, this is EXCELLENT.
:D  :applause: Warner it'll be, then. I live in a VERY conservative area, and even here most Republicans hate Gilmore for screwing up our economy with his stupid "no car tax" thing. And most of them are OK with Mark Warner. (Those who aren't will probably vote for him anyway, thinking he's John Warner, lol.)

5. Yeah running against the guy who fixed your mess is not a good idea
but Gilmore is the darling of the hardcore conservatives around here and after that bloodbath of primaries they had this year throwing the cons red meat in the form of Gilmore will maybe bring everyone back together even if it costs them a seat for life. Virginia Republicans :eyes:

I agree. No one is going to vote for Gilmore.

6. Just wait until the story about him openly parading his girlfriend around gets out
while his wife had to move and go stay with family friend Patricia Cornwell.

8. It's going to get real ugly
The republics are desperate. They have lost the last two Gubernatorial elections and "Macaca" went down to a relative unknown last year. Gilmore damn near bankrupted the Commonwealth when he was Gov. His only prayer is to sling alot of mud at Warner and hope some of it sticks. It will be a nasty, ugly campaign.

9. optimistic
Warner is the more visible candidate, which should be a plus here. When I saw that James Gilmore was running for President, I asked myself "Who the heck is Jim Gilmore". I eventually learned he was the Governor of the state. Gilmore's diappointing run for Pres. shouldn't help him out here.
