1. If so, its a huge improvement over just a few years ago...
That 38% don't think I deserve ANY RIGHTS is scary, but still better than just a few years ago.

5. 2006 was the last gasp for 'family values' fearmongering to work
and get conservatives to the polls with gay marriage bans.

Most people simply aren't worried about gays getting married anymore.

It's looking good for 2008

11. And also...
A lot of the people who voted certain "leaders" into office did so because of promises about things like this. Now that they know those promises aren't worth beans, they may start using their own brains.

12. That's that same ~35% that turns up as Religiously Insane in every poll on every topic.
Our country may or may not survive them.

3. How about...
... the various governments in this country stops using the term "marriage"?

Leave deciding who is 'married' or not in the assorted religions of the country.

The government issues 'civil unions' to any couple that want them and is old enough. And we leave the divine gospel or prophecy or whatever to determine who is married in the eyes of God.

So if the Catholics don't want gays to be 'married', then they can sit there in their diocese offices and deny religious marriage to all the homosexuals they want, while those same homosesxuals have the legal and medical protections of civil law.

And if the Mormans or Muslims want to "marry" a dozen wives, then go right ahead, as long as you only civil unionize one of them.

In fact, we could even expand this to multiple unions. A person could civil unionize with as many people as he or she wants to. But here's the kicker: each new civil union requires all others to sign off on it.

6. i would say thats an improvement
"legally form civil unions but not marry" would seem to me that people are hung up on the "marriage" because they think of it as "church wedding" but may accept legal civil unions. "civil unions" in this country is one step on the road to acceptance of the idea of people marrying who they want. in the future we will see the numbers of the "no`s" diminish. sometimes i`m an optimist because i`m old enough to remember when no one ever mentioned homosexuality let alone marriage...

8. I bet you a large section of the 26% for civil unions think that churches would be FORCED to...
to perform such unions. Disabuse them of that incorrect notion, and they may turn to our side.

9. Another step closer to victory on Gay Rights
It's good to see a majority now supporting at least civil unions. As much as we'd all like to see gay marriage legalized, we have to remember that most minority groups didn't gain all their rights and acceptance overnight. It took a lot of time for African Americans to get to where they are today, and it'll take time to get that kind of acceptance of Gays. But we're definitely making progress over the years, especially in the youth, with something like 2/3's of them supporting gay marriage/rights. As much as some people feel that civil unions for gays and not marriage amounts to 'separate but equal' all over again it may be a step necessary to legalize gay marriage, by getting people used to something a step closer to gay marriage first and to accept it.
