Getting a Political Donation returned

what's the usual practice with this?

Several of my gay friends donated to Obama but, after the anti-gay McClurkin debacle, they now desperately want their donations returned. Unfortunately, they can't get a straight answer from Obama's campaign. They get transferred and then put on hold and then the connection gets broken. So, they call back and it's lather, rinse, repeat all over again. Any ideas if the return of these donations is possible?

A few were via InterNet and the others were checks -- which they've ordered their banks to cancel if they haven't already been cashed.
