Not a SINGLE gay person should leave DU over this shit
You are totally and utterly in the right in this situation and you should not let cowardly words written by unenlightened and uninformed people, hiding behind the shield of anonymity, turn you away from a discussion board that is rightfully as much yours as anyone else's.

If you leave, they win.

40. Hey yardwork - I have a question.
Since us gays are just talking among ourselves maybe someone can help me with this. It is off topic a little but one of Obama's most vocal defenders of the use of McSinger on the program has repeatedly asserted his personal love of the gays by stating "I am straight but I have done grassroots outreach in the gay community for many years". I have asked what it means (as have others) but have received no response.

Do you have any idea what grassroots outreach in the gay community might be? I have thought about it and thought about it and can't recall a single activity of outreach other than coming to our bars to dance.

BTW - what do you think of the new bar?

Perhaps we should plan a meetup and let the Obama person come do a little outreach.

On the other hand, he probably doesn't want to meet a bunch of women.

Just when you think we might have a little plateau in the DU primary roller-coaster ride. Hang in there folks. Obama's wound is self-inflicted. He will have either learned a lesson that will serve him well in the future, or he won't... and posters with attitudes as the one identified on that thread-- I truly believe-- are in the distinct minority.

For one thing, it appears to me that an enormous majority of DUers disagree with Obama's behavior. Many Obama supporters have posted their disappointment here.

There are a small handful of troublemakers - most of them longtime, known troublemakers - who are attempting to disrupt the board over this. I've put them on ignore. Problem solved!

what in the hell is wrong with people..I thought the republicans were the group that discriminate. Lighten up DU. It takes all kinds, all colors and all religions to make up this world. AND EVERY SINGLE ONE IS JUST AS GOOD AS THE OTHER.

I have had gay friends all my life, back in the 50's and 60's when we were discriminated against because we refused to not associate with them. They were my friends damn it and still are.

I have been a Democrat longer than I have been gay so I can not be moved.

I think a lot of people (gay and straight) have just found their voice within this political party by slapping down bigotry - sometimes nicely packaged but bigotry nevertheless.

I am going to stick around and watch the voices grow.

Let the river run.

60. I guess I didn't get the memo that we have to "understand" and "tolerate" hatred and bigotry
And don't you know I just love when, in their tortured defense of Rev. McClosetCase's 1/2 hour sermon of hate and homophobia, posters actually have the audacity to reference MLK. As if Dr. King ever said we have to give bigots a microphone and an audience.

I've seen the question issued - "Well, what then do we do with the bigots and the homophobes?". My answer? I don't give a fuck...let them come to right and reason or they can fuck off and become even more archaic and outdated while the world moves on without them. Like we're supposed to have "meaningful dialogue" with Neanderthals who judge others by their orientation....or their skin color...or their religion (or lack thereof.....or their place of birth....etc.

65. Oh No, They Don't
I am tired of people using pseudo Christianity to justify bigotry and hatred. My Christianity is inclusive, not exclusive. People that quote Leviticus without knowing Biblical history as well as ancient history are doing nothing more than giving all people of faiths a bad name. Just as I don't believe God has ever talked the Bush, I don't believe he is judging people by Roberts' standards.

My sil is gay and her sexuality has never been hidden. She is also my daughter's favorite aunt and a great mom. Many denominations say they have an anti-discrimination policy but in many churches it's just words on paper. My sil attends the same church we do and while we are an itty bitty congregation everyone is welcome. Out gay members are not shoved to the side lines. They also serve in leadership roles. It's faith not sexuality that makes you a person of faith. It just chaps my hide when I see someone crying about religious beliefs to justify discrimination of any kind.

Until I started reading the GLBT board I thought I understood gay issues. I learned how wrong I was and I am still learning. I guess I will am anti-religion also because I sure don't agree with what Obama did.

66. McClosetCase's bigotry is out in the open and proud
but what's even more troubling to me is Obama's rationalization for including this disgusting homophobe in his campaign event. He actually portrayed the "LGBT community" and the "faith-based community" as mutually exclusive entities. That's truly disappointing.
