Angry Edwards campaign continues to throw mud at Clinton and Obama
http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2007/10/memo_wars_edwards_campaign_on.php#comments

What a classy crowd.

And there's a dig at Barack Obama on the next page:

"The rest of the contenders? Well, let’s just say that even the best hype machines can’t disguise a real featherweight."

So angry and so bitter. I wonder how that will play in Iowa.

1. He's one to talk about being a featherweight.
Oh, brother!

2. Not Very Well, Sir
The primary electorate of our Party will not reward assaults on other Democratic candidates.

3. It's one thing to draw distinctions.
Another to smear and call names.

Citizen Edwards is definitely running like this is his last race--because it almost certainly is.

14. Wow
if that's as "low" as it goes, I think the electorate is in pretty good shape. By the way, all the campaigns put these kind of spin memos every day, as you probably know.

17. Well, let's just say that there's more than a tinge
of you-know-what for a white man with far lesser intellectual credentials to be referring to a black man as a 'featherweight.'

24. I'm certainly wouldn't read that into it
I tend to think that it is a reference to a lack of experience or a lack of gravitas, not a lack of intellect. I am not an Edwards guy, and I have no beef with Obama, but I don't think you can call every tussle in the campaign to be a racial slur.

25. Lack of gravitas?
To be blunt, I doubt that a white man with Obama's professional and academic accomplishments would be called an 'empty suit' or 'featherweight' or 'lacking gravitas.'

30. Really?
I hear very white John Edwards' detractors refer to him as an empty suit all the time. Several have in this thread, even. Being white certainly didn't keep Dan Quayle, a two term Senator, from being called a featherweight. Now of course Dan was a featherweight by any standard and Obama is no Dan Quayle, but whether to term is appropriate for Obama or not, it is a stretch to call it a racial slur.

33. Again
I don't think it was an attack on his intellect. As an aside, no offense to your candidate, but I have known plenty of law review editors, and I can't think of one of them that I would want to be President of the United States. I think the comment is an attempt to paint Obama as inexperienced in politics and not a "heavyweight" in the world of hardball politics, not reset of Al Campanis. You can read into it what you want. It is certainly fair game for you to spin his spin right back at him in an attempt to help your candidate. That's politics.

I'm sure they're crowing about their victories as well. The campaign goes on, 24/7 ... is that so surprising?

There is a certain Youtube video that I almost feel compelled to rebut his point.

20. Yes, and that video has been all over the place ... I wonder how?
These are POLITICIANS ... They run negative ads, they use any negative footage to impugn their opponents, no one smear is any WORSE or "out of bounds" than another. Edwards is just fighting back as any of the other would have, especially after having been IGNORED as well as smeared for the better part of the past six months.
