Beware of telemarketers claiming to be from campaigns
Edited on Wed Oct-31-07 08:31 PM by Perky
So I got a phone call last night from a woman claiming to work for the Obama campaign and telling me its time to ratchet things up between no and the Iowa Caucuses and then giving me pitch for a contribution of $300 by credit card.

But here is the problem. I have already maxed out my federal limit.....which I tell her and then explain that I was very surprised that their Db did not tell her that. She then proceeded to tell me that she was third party agent and as such the federal limits did not apply.

Are my dollars going to Obama? I queried.... "Yes" she stated with great impatience. I then told her that $300 was pretty steep and in my case illegal..... she then says... how about $20?

I told her I would contribute online.

Scam?

2. I'd be real suspicious.
My general rule is that I never give credit card or any other personal information to someone who has contacted me. I insist on being the one who initiates contact so I know who I'm dealing with.

You have no way of knowing if the person who called you is for real or not, nor how they really intend to use your information.

4. Never never donate over the phone or to people that come to your door.
They most or less all work for the same company even if they say they are from the DNC (sometimes with DNC shirts)

This company raised 25million for the DNC in 2005 but 21million of it when to pay them, not to the DNC.

5. You did wisely. Nobody who calls me gets my credit card number. Nobody.

Only if I initiate the call and want to buy or contribute something does my credit card leave the safety of my wallet. Period. Based on what you've said above, all my alarm bells would have been going off. Do you have Caller ID? If so, what was on the display?

Meanwhile, the details on campaign contribution limits are here:

6. I got that call too last week. I told them I donate online.
She still wanted me to give a donation over the phone. I told her no.
