Sen. Clinton undecided on U.S.-Peru free trade pact

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2007/10/30/sen_clinton_undecided_on_us_peru_free_trade_pact/

By Doug Palmer | October 30, 2007

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton has not decided whether to vote for a free trade agreement with Peru, a spokesman for the New York senator said on Tuesday.

"Senator Clinton is still reviewing the agreement," Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines said in an e-mail.

Congress is nearing final action on the agreement, which the Bush administration concluded nearly two years ago.

The House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee will vote on Wednesday on the Peru agreement, setting the stage for votes in the House and the Senate in coming weeks.

U.S. business groups have hoped a big vote in favor of the Peru agreement would help clear the way for more controversial trade deals with Panama, Colombia and South Korea.

As her party's front-runner, Clinton's decision could influence how many other Democrats view the Peru pact.

2. She's not undecided; she supports and opposes it, and she supports your opposition to it and opposes
Edited on Thu Nov-01-07 08:25 PM by Stop Cornyn
your effort to make her oppose supporting and opposing it simultaneously. Her position is perfectly clear, and you could disagree but that would just be piling on (which she opposes, unless it's piling on Obama or Edwards, which she supports).

3. I know which way I think she'll go on this
But maybe she'll surprise me.

I'm sure that no matter which way she votes she'll do the classic Clintonian dance and cover her bases either way.

12. He's lousy on trade
But at least we know he's lousy on trade, unlike Hillary who pretends to be all things to all people and really isn't anything to anybody except the upper 10% who she likes to call the "middle class" and Bush likes to call "his base".

13. More about the harm from the trade deals. Rain Forests, Peru's Social Security
Peru, Panama & Colombia: NAFTA Expansion to the Rainforest and Beyond

"Unfortunately, this May 2007 brought shockingly bad news. A handful of Democrats in the House of Representatives struck a "deal" with President Bush on the Peru and Panama FTAs that could pave the way also to the passage of the Colombia FTA and even to more Fast Track trade negotiating authority for President Bush. The deal makes needed improvements to the labor and environmental provisions, but unfortunately leaves in almost all the bad NAFTA-style provisions that fair trade groups demanded be taken out. Thus, the deal only puts a new roof on a condemned building."

NAFTA vote next week could force privatized Social Security on Peru

"There may be a vote on the Peru NAFTA Expansion as early as November 5th – next week!

The proposed Bush expansion of NAFTA to Peru contains frightening provisions that could lock Peru into a privatized social security system similar to the Bush proposal that Democrats successfully fought last Congress. The main beneficiary of the provision seems to be Citibank, the largest shareholder in ProFuturo AFP, a company authorized to compete against Peru's national social security system.

If a lot of members of Congress vote for the Peru "free trade agreement" (FTA) containing this outrage, it could set a dangerous precedent for Social Security policies here at home. Congress needs to hear that Social Security has no business in a trade agreement."

14. Hillary can't publicly tell the truth here.
If she did, she would lose the support of the majority of Americans who Work for a Living.

She will perform for her corporate backers.

More non-answers from the most conservative Democratic candidate.

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans. I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans, family farmers, and people who haven't felt the benefits of the economic upturn."---Paul Wellstone
