question to the DLC:
Is waterboarding a form of torture?

Happy to entertain answers from anyone willing to fill in for Al From and Harold Ford.

2. I thought the official answer was "what do the polls say?"
You'd think people who will say or do anything to get votes would win more elections. Huh, Harold?

3. Not a DLC'er
But from their actions in regard to Mukasey, I take it they aren't that stridently opposed to it.

5. Where does our Trojan horse stand on this issue?
I'm willing to bet they are willing to live with it. The third way is a cousin to neoconservatism.

6. open letter to Harold Ford.
Dear Chairman Ford,
In light of today's decision by Senators Feinstein and Schumer to support Michael Mukasey for Attorney General, I would like to know the position of the DLC concerning waterboarding, specifically whether or not the practice constitutes torture and whether or not its use in the War on Terror is justified under American law.

Thank you in advance.

8. from BluePrint (DLC publication), May 2006
"One clear area where progressives can draw that line between themselves and the Bush administration is on the use of torture as an instrument of American military policy. The prisoner abuses at Abu Ghraib and the promotion of extreme interrogation techniques at Guantanamo not only invite others to mistreat U.S. prisoners; they also erode our moral standing with advocates of human rights and democracy abroad.

Principled conservatives, notably Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), know that "waterboarding" is incompatible with freedom fighting. It is disgraceful that many others, including Vice President Dick Cheney, do not. "

But if the OP had done so, he wouldn't be able to use this snarky post...

9. Of Course It Is, Sir
It is hard to imagine anyone not facing prosecution under relevant laws for torturing prisoners even attempting to deny it.

12. Magistrate, maybe you can help me with another question, then.
Why in blazing hell would two Democratic Senators from blue states support the nomination as AG of a man who can't admit that it is?

13. For No Reason Good Enough To Justify The Action, Sir
Since nothing that could justify it exists.

14. I know you understand where I'm going with this, my friend.
What the fuck is up with these Dems? Jesus wept, even as a purely political matter divorced from all moral questions, it doesn't make a damned bit of sense - this is a lame-duck president whose approval has been dropping like a rock and who got his electoral ass handed to him a year ago. The GOP would have been on the barricades given the same advantage, yet we do nothing except make a little noise and then give Junior whatever he wants. Sound and fury, signifying nothing.
