Gore Should Announce Intentions
I guess a number of people might get angry at me for making such a post, but I think it is time for Al Gore to make an announce about his intentions regardless of what they are. It is now time for Gore to stop toying with people and make a definitive statement. I figure some of his supporters will say he already has made a statement. However, I contend he needs to come out and make a clear statement saying either he will run or he will not run. He needs to stop the as of right now stuff and the at this point. If he is thinking about running he should say he is thinking about running. If he is not he should say he is not thinking about running.

I do not dislike Al Gore. I would vote for him if he ran. I just think it is time for Gore to make a clear statement so those waiting on either side can move on and look at other candidates.

1. I don't know how many times he's going to have to say it.

2. He's said for months that he has no intentions to run...
Jeez! It was only his diehard fans that kept over-analyzing his words.

18. The continual use of the wiggle words.
When he knows or should know that the words are being interpreted as such.

In 2002 he made a clear definitive statement about 2004 w/o the use of wiggle words, but continues to REFUSE to issue a similar definitive statement.

"I don't have plans to be a candidate" is not a definitive statement

4. Well, he's obviously keeping the door open by his choice of words...
He "has no plans" and "has no intentions" is just not the same as saying he "won't run" ~ why he keeps the door open is anyone's guess.

(Remember Senator Craig talking about "intentions" ~ that's political-speak for "no final word.")

7. Won' t the Draft Gore donations be turned over to the DNC ?
I think that's how the draft movements work, so I'm sure the longer he waits the more money he's raised for Democrats overall.

It's also keeping his name and his great environmental work in the media.

Why stop ?

15. It would be misappropriation of funds
If you have a particular cause and people donate money to THAT cause and for whatever reason the "cause" ends, you can't just use the money for any old purpose you want.

Second, you would create a nightmare, as a "draft" movement could just wind up as a shell for illegal donations to other causes to circumvent election laws.

The owners of the organization can use the money to maintain the website, or turn it into a "gore advocacy" website, etc.. However, to take money given to them for one purpose and circumvent laws to use it for another, unrelated purpose without prior disclosure... that would be asking for a class action lawsuit and I have little doubt that a large number of donators don't want their money going to the DNC or any other organization that is going to support the candidates they are desperately trying to make sure do not become the nominee.

20. From ActBlue:
How do "Draft Funds" work?
Draft Funds make it possible for you to contribute to and fundraise for a Prospective Candidate before the individual has formally declared for office and registered a presidential campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission. Contributions to Draft Funds are held in escrow and transferred to the campaign committee of the Prospective Candidate as soon as it is registered. If a Prospective Candidate does not register a campaign committee by the registration deadline for the primary (or, in the case of Presidential Draft Funds, one week before the Democratic National Convention), the funds go to a default beneficiary. (In general, this will be the DCCC for House races, the DSCC for Senate races and the DNC for the Presidency, and will be identified in the disclaimer text at the bottom of the contribution page.) For the purposes of contribution limits, a contribution to one of these funds counts just like any other individual contribution to the Prospective Candidate or the default recipient.

We created these funds after the FEC's November 9, 2006, decision permitting fundraising for prospective candidates in response to our request. For details, see FEC Advisory Opinion 2006-30.

25. Different entities...
Here you are talking about funds contributed to the SPECIFIC candidate vs funds contributed for the operation of a draft movement.

I just used the rules from Act Blue, which certainly does have *rules*

Where did the funds for the Draft Clark movement go?

29. It depends on the purpose for which they are collected.
If they are collected as part of a pledge (we are collecting funds on your behalf to give to candidate X when they enter) they are subject to the rules you just mentioned.

If they are collected by an organization as part of its mission, they have to be spent on the mission of that organization. For example, if moveon.org asks for money to run an ad and wants to raise $100,000, but they raise $200,000 OR the purpose of the ad is suddenly non-existent, they can use the money for the running of moveon.org; however, they CANNOT just take that money and donate it to a different political organization.

In the case of DraftGore.com they are not collecting money in escrow for or on behalf of Al Gore, but instead for the purpose of advocating Al Gore as a presidential choice and running the ads/ Draft Gore website. They cannot take that money donated to them for that purpose and give to the DNC, DLC, DCCC or any other organization, lest they could AND WOULD be sued by those who gave money.

If they wanted to operate the website to advocate for other candidates, that would be up to them, but there is a big difference between that and just giving money you collected for one purpose and misappropriating it to another.

12. Why should he announce any more than he has? He doesn't owe us anything.
The country elected Gore in 2000 but the Supreme Court was allowed to overturn the election and put a pretender in the White House. Our nation followed up that stupendous achievement in 2004 by allowing the murderous pretender to steal another election.

What does Al Gore owe us? We should be apologizing to him and kicking ourselves for not insisting that our elected president be allowed to become president.

24. Gore is waiting to see if an Act of God happens
Things happen in life, often bad ones. If one of those happens to a front runner Gore will jump in saying that there is "changed circumstances. I need to fill the vacuum." If nothing happens he will stay out. That is why he won't make an iron-clad statement that he is not running. You never know what happens.....

27. I don't see him endorsing anyone.
He is literally above the fray now. There are also the political implications of endorsing a candidate. Obama has turned down Brad Pitt and George Clooney who have asked to campaign on his behalf, plus Oprah has been told to stand down. I have no clue if that is a good or bad thing. Obama was quoted as saying he hopes Gore will consider a very senior position in his White House, but I think Al Gore will implement his prescription for the planet on a global basis as opposed to from/via the White House.
