Robert Scheer Debates Ralph Nader
Truthdig Editor Robert Scheer goes head to head with progressive icon Ralph Nader, who denies the charge that he has been a spoiler and challenges the value of the Democratic Party.

Special thanks to The Nation.

Editor’s note: The following exchange, transcribed here, is from a debate between Scheer and Nader aboard The Nation cruise in late July 2007.

Here the spoiler and Republican-funded traitor to progressives offers wayward filibustering and dodging of serious questions regarding his candidacy. And in the middle of it he says "I’m open to ideas, what do you say, bro?" Open to ideas? Nader had already decided on an idea in 1996, 2000, and 2004, one that gave us Bush*, and he still hasn't decided what should really be done?

2. I just couldn't read all of it
I couldn't take Nader's BS any more. I guess he didn't get the message that Gore wasn't Clinton, and that VP's really don't have that much power unless, of course you're Cheney. It was more of the throw the baby out with the bath water crap. Sorry, can't stand that man anymore, and I used to admire him.

3. I'm getting tired of people blaming Nader for Shrub

Nader did NOT siphon or take away votes from Gore in 2000. Grown adults decided to vote for him, rather than the other two candidates. Obviously, many people who supported him in '00 did not support him in '04 (Due to him receiving almost 2.5MM less votes in '04). Democrats need to learn a few things from Republicans and fight back. We've supported weak candidates; and when I say weak, I do not mean the men personally, but their campaign strategies and execution were weak. If the Al Gore of today (someone who fights for his beliefs and doesn't give in the Republican spin) were to replace the Al Gore of '00, then we would have won the White House easily.

Whoever our candidate is after the primary needs to fight long and hard to show how much better a Democratic White House will be to 4 more years of Neocon rule. He needs to say to the American people, "What is more important to you and your family: having undocumented workers in this country have the ability to earn a driver's license, or your family being able to afford health care?" They need to create TRUE wedge issues that affect the majority of Americans, not succumb to this crap about gay marriage or illegal immigration.

I hope whoever we nominate takes off the gloves.

EDIT: forgot the 'NOT'. Kind of important :)
