to each individual server, personally, which everyone knows is the proper tipping etiquette, instead of just leaving it on the table.

Try actually reading the story. The tip was confirmed, there's a receipt, etc.

Denial is a wonderful thing.

31. Receipt shows no tip. Only the manager said he "believed" there was a tip.
Of course, the tip is not the story. The smear tactics from the Hillary people is the real story.

8. RE: NPR update this morning
A Hillary staffer brought out $20 yesterday (11/8/07) to the waitress at the Maid-Rite in Toledo after the story broke.

Clinton's original version was that the bill was paid with a credit card and a $100 tip was added on. The manager at the Maid-Rite pointed out their old credit card machine doesn't allow them to add tips. Then the Clinton campaign produced the alleged receipt showing the tip. Then the manager said that maybe the other employees pocketed the entire $100 tip. The waitress in the story said she has worked with some of these people all of her life and they would not pocket $100 without sharing with her. Then Thursday, the Clinton staffer shows up with $20.

NPR's reporter was drilled by Clinton's staff because he did not "vet" the story with them before going on air.

The truth is that the woman who waited on Hillary did not get a tip until yesterday, after the story broke. The rest is spin and intimidation by the Clinton organization when they made a mistake.

We do not need a nominee or a president who refuses to admit mistakes and then pulls a Nixon cover up and intimidates people who report the mistake. We have lived through that nightmare! Enough!

Hillary go back to New York!

You should actually read a few articles before pretending to know something.

From the NPR story:

A Clinton campaign staffer called on Esterday at the restaurant Thursday after the story aired. The staff member apologized to her and gave her a $20 bill, according to Esterday. The Clinton campaign confirmed that visit. The campaign also produced photocopies of receipts showing $157.46 was paid to Maid-Rite on a VISA card on Oct. 8 for meals consumed by the candidate's entourage. The tip was supposed to have been paid in cash, and the campaign insisted such a payment was made but has declined to make available a staff member who was present at Maid-Rite and left tip money.

Was there another receipt you were referring to?? Or were you planning on mentioning more things that show the exact opposite of what you're trying to prove?

14. So the actual manager of the restaurant stating that the tip happened means nothing to you
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003670383

But Brad Crawford, manager of the Toledo Maid-Rite, said Clinton's campaign aides paid the bill for lunch and left a tip to be divided among the servers.

"They all paid their bill and they left a tip. They paid it all that same day when they left and everything was good," he said.

Crawford said he didn't know why Esterday may not have received any of the money.

"If she got left out it wasn't because they meant to leave her out," Crawford said of Esterday. "If something happened with the disbursement, it's probably my fault."

Spin that one

28. Re: This says a lot about the Clinton organization
Anybody else remember a presidential candidate or president deny making a mistake, change their story, cover up, and then intimidate the press when they reported the mistake, the denial and the cover up? Nixon? W?

Clinton's response horrifies me. If this woman becomes president, we will see the abuses of power by W perpetuated, not reversed. God help us if we have eight more years of secrecy, censorship and intimidation of the press.

36. And it's the second time HRC has done this; it also happened

in her first campaign for the Senate. Waitress was stiffed and HRC campaign handled it badly. Is she trying to get working class voters to vote for someone else? If not, she needs to get her campaign better organized about paying bills and tipping servers when she eats in restaurants.

Edited on Fri Nov-09-07 03:25 PM by IronLionZion
an expensive meal with wine doesn't warrant more money than a more affordable meal. The servers at the more affordable places work just as hard. The tip should be related to the service. Poor service means less tip, great service means more tip.

42. Of course there is a standard. Feel free to tip more

but don't tip less than 20% unless the server is rude, and then you should talk to the manager.

If service is slow or you get the wrong food, that's probably the kitchen's error, not the server's. An expensive meal with wine does warrant a bigger tip than a more affordable meal. If you can afford that expensive meal, you can afford the 20% tip. Don't be a cheapskate. Servers in expensive restaurants have to buy more expensive uniforms and know more about formal serving so they have extra skills and extra investments in their work.

44. Does steak and lobster with wine warrant more tip than a hamburger and soda?
what if it is in the same restaurant. I don't think opening up a $100 bottle of wine warrants more tip than opening a bottle of $10 wine. And I'm sure mixing up a bunch of martinis is more work than opening bottles of beer. And I do realize that the server shares the tip with the busboy and bartender. I worked in a restaurant and know how much work goes into it. There has to be an incentive for good service. Otherwise, what's the point in tipping?

Maybe I am a cheapskate, but I gently persuade my girlfriend that a nice candle-lit meal we cook ourselves with store-bought wine is more romantic than any restaurant. She's the one who wants the expensive restaurants with overpriced wine.
