Obama's campaign rhetoric reminds me of Reagan in 1980 and 1984
Obama's strategy seems to be to outflank Hillary by presenting himself as even more conservative than she. His rhetoric reminds me of Ronald Reagan's campaigns. I keep waiting for Peggy Noonan to pop up behind Obama at a campaign stop in Iowa.

Obama appeals to right-wing curmudgeons by echoing their gripes about hippies and long-hairs. He sounds like he's standing around retirement villages at Hilton Head with a bunch of old white guys who wear their sansabelts up around their necks.

Then Obama turns around and tries to appeal to the younger set by claiming that he's actually one of them, not one of those tired old geezer baby boomers.

Next it's on to the Evangelical crowd as he throws the GLBTQ vote under the bus.

"It's morning in America."

Your candidate has managed to make a lot of people really angry. Rather than turning your anger on them for expressing their reaction, why not write to your candidate and suggest that he change his tactics? Insulting me is not going to make a single person decide to support Obama.

After the criminal way in which the entire Republican Party has behaved, nobody in their right mind should want to be associated with Republican values or tactics.

Unfortunately, the Democratic front runners seem to be trying to outdo one another in conservatism. That's pathetic. Don't yell at the messengers. Take a look at your candidates.

27. I think you missed your history lessons.
Raygun ran on strident conservative ideals and policy positions in 1980. He promoted the country's supposed resurgent strength and return to "greatness" in 1984. He was running on his record as an incumbent. Obama's message and rhetoric is about Unity and Progress(whether you agree with the premise or not). Please show us all exactly how Obama's rhetoric matches Reagan. Examples?

Whatever the case, Raygun won in two landslides. Perhaps Obama will enjoy the same fate.

38. I think that Obama's campaign strategy is similar to Reagan's.
I'm not saying that their policies are similar. They're obviously not. What is similar is the rhetoric.

Reagan's approach was to reassure people by appealing to their own biases and gut instincts. Obama's criticism of baby boomers reflects the attitudes of a lot of people (including many who, like Obama himself, are actually part of that demographic). He positions himself with right-wing evangelicals in South Carolina to show that he's more "serious" about religion than Hillary, even when it means tossing gay people under the bus.

Reagan did the same kind of thing. He'd talk in this grandfatherly way and shake his finger and smile and say, "There you go again," appealing to people who thought that everything would be fine if only the welfare queens got cut off from government assistance. Reagan's message was that "trees cause most of the pollution" so we don't have to worry about emissions or anything complicated like that. It was a feel good message but the actual impact was evil, pure evil.

I hate to see Obama using that kind of feel good rhetoric that actually panders to people's fears and biases.

70. I think that they are trying to outflank Hillary by presenting Obama as more conservative.
I think that Obama's campaign is positioning him to appeal to their idea of a "moderate" - people who are not particularly progressive in their views.

I think that Obama's team is banking on the fact that there are plenty of wussy Americans who fall back to the conservative-center on a lot of social issues. They don't particularly approve of gay people. They don't like being reminded how wrong they were about Vietnam. They prefer griping about "those damned hippies." They're nervous about the "extremes" on abortion - whatever that means. They're not very comfortable with the idea of impeachment. They don't want anyone to do or say anything that might interfere with their enjoyment of the ball game this weekend.

A number of posters on this board who have Obama avatars seem to reflect those views, so I'd say his team is successful in appealing to them.

Excuse him if he is holding it back, he, like Hillary, is thinking of the General Election and you can not, for some reason, be ultra progressive. Though it is all of our ideas to give health care and equality to all....

54. I think that your definition of "ultra progressive" is different from mine.
I don't think I've heard any candidate for a major office in the U.S. utter a remotely "ultra progressive" comment since, I don't know, maybe 1968? (Probably not even then.)

We have countries all over the world today with female socialist leaders, full marriage rights for gay people, full health care benefits to everyone - and here in the U.S. Obama is pointing to the "culture wars" of the 1960s as our biggest problem???

Come on. This is not even close to progressive rhetoric, much less ultra progressive. Hillary's no better - I'm no Hillary supporter either. It's pathetic how right wing the entire country has become.

It's almost as if he misreads the political situation entirely. Perhaps he would have been better suited for 2000 or 2004, but at this point Democrats are not really in any sort of mood to hear about how we've helped divide the country or how the other candidates only want to be President of Blue America. It sounds good, but, um, it's completely out of place and ill-timed. This isn't a general election and besides, Democrats are pissed and want some real power back - power to clean up Bush's and the GOP's mess. If the Rethugs are good maybe they can help too, but otherwise we plan on increasing our margins in the congress and winning the presidency so they can no longer be an obstacle to real progress in this country.

78. Well played. Audacious, but the results speak for themselves.
This is flamebait for the ages.
