With just more than 14 months to go in his second term, George W Bush is clinging to power by bullying the Democrats and with threats of disloyalty from the Republicans. His Party continues to support his crimes and misadventures. The Democrats continue to flinch everytime he swings. It is truly a sad state of affairs in our nation.
Never, in our living memory, have we seen such an arrogant disregard for the laws and Constitution of our country. This would include the Richard M. Nixon era. How does he get away with it?
In one sense, he was "immunized" by the Clinton impeachment. Ironically, it was mostly political payback by the Republicans for the Nixon and Watergate years. However, it built up a wall of sorts that kept the Democrats from going thru another impeachment proceeding so soon after the Clinton mess. Unfortunately, no president has deserved impeachment more than George W Bush. But he will escape.
However, the Republican Party will likely pay the price for this debacle. Can it be called anything other than a "debacle"? The Republicans are hoping the consequences will be short term. They truly believe that they can build up the "negatives" on this Democratic Congress to the point that most voters will forget the debacle of the last eight years. They are sensing that they can win the White House once again.
The weak leadership and lack of courage by the Democrats is helping the Republicans more than anything else at the moment. They are stuck with the milquetoast leadership of Reid and Pelosi just when they need courageous and bold leaders that will challenge the Republicans every step of the way. The ineptitude and incompetence of the Republicans have left the Democrats speechless. They have no true plan of action. They do not have the courage for the drastic change needed - much like the change that was needed in 1932. These Democrats will mostly cling to the status quo.
History will ask "Why"? Why, after all the crimes and deceptions, this President was permitted free reign to do what he wanted? Most of it will be attributed to the after-effects of 9/11 and the fear of being branded as "weak on national defense" and the "war on terror". It will be a sad chapter in our history.
