Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 07:08 PM by PlanetBev
I'm so desperate at this point, I'm ready to drive out to Yorba Linda and dig up Richard Nixon. Yeah, he was paranoid and a crook, but he was pretty good on the environment and you didn't have to hang your head in shame when he went overseas on a diplomatic tour.

My first choice, however, would probably be Truman, the man who was president when I was born. Maybe it's because of my favorite Truman quote, "Always bring the fight to them, and never apologize for anything."

If a Democratic said that nowadays, I'd faint in shock.

11. As great and wonderful as his ideals were, he didn't really do much as president.
He got rid of a few excises, but did nothing about the Bank that he had previously fought so hard against. He also put in place the embargo, which was overall a COMPLETE failure. While he wasn't a bad president per se (the Embargo put aside, he had a good reason behind it, but he didn't think it through very well), but he didn't really do much of anything good. I'm all for his published ideas, but at the end of the day, he pretty much just threw his arms up and said "Oh well! I tried."

19. Did Nothing? Egads!
He did a lot, he eliminated a standing military (ultimate peace candidate), he bought the Louisiana Purchase, he believed that this country needed a good uprising from time to time. He eliminated the alien and sedition acts. He reinforced the separation of church and state. Generally he was for the yeoman farmer, which were small time farmers. He was heavily influenced by the French Revolution, which was one of the most populist events to take place in human history. He was staunchly against Alexander Hamilton, who was an elitist (Republican of his day), Hamilton wanted to make Washington king. He probably would have been a social democrat, but in those days the poor could get free land and start their own farm.

22. James Garfield, who never really had a chance.
Garfield was a Republican, but that was back in the days when Republicans were the good guys. He was a remarkable self-made man, a scholar and a thinker who never really had a chance to govern, having been shot very early in his term.

13. Plenty of good choices - Certainly Lincoln, FDR, Washington
The Big Three in just about any historians' poll. Washington at least had integrity, which we desperately need right now (yeah, he was a slaveowner, but at least he freed his slaves at his death. Jefferson did not.)

Definitely not Nixon. I don't know enough about Truman to really say, he seems a little to gullible to fear-mongering to me.

34. Lee Iacoca
Anyone who could bring Chrysler back from the grave like he did would be a good bet to turn this country around that Bush has left in a shambles.

or...FDR would be a great choice for healing all the divisiveness that asswipe Bush created. He could bring this country back together for sure.
