The resemblance between Obama's campaign and Gary Hart's
is simply striking. I was one year old in 1984, and I honestly don't know much about this character, but watching his 1984 primary ads... it makes me feel like he's Obama's direct predecessor.

Am I wrong in my observation?

1. Time warp! Time warp!
But there is NO Donna Rice in Barack's resumé -- and considerably more of the all-embracing, inspiring, and charismatic persona we need today.

I really feel good about Obama's chances in this race.

GObama!

2. I understand your sense but I don't see them as similar, frankly.
Gary Hart had surface charisma, but unless you're saying that Obama has a slight quality of insincerity and a "not ready for prime time" veneer, I don't think you want to say that they are similar.

There was more than a touch of arrogance about the fellow, and when he finally bit the dust four years later with the Monkey Business business, there were more than a few people who felt that his own hubris did him in, and who also felt "Serves the smartass right." That "Follow me--I dare ya!" attitude existed well before he got bagged.

That's my remembrance of the fellow. And I was a working, voting adult back then.

Shit, it seems like yesterday, but the mirror tells me otherwise.

4. Your last sentence really got me. LOL !
True dat !

You're basically right about Hart. I liked him a lot and he was probably the best of all the candidates on both sides to lead the country in the right direction.
Kennedy, Hart & Clinton are probably the smartest most qualified leaders this country has seen, but they all had the same weakness....

Me too.

5. Well, you know what they say...
Nine months trying to get out, the rest of your life trying to get back in!

After the excorations for unseemly behavior, I suppose points for persistence are in order...!

You have to wonder if there's a correlation! Find the biggest horn dog who did well in school, he'll be the best leader in the future!

7. I'm embarrassed..
I was one of the "smart kids" in school. Voted most likely to succeed--and more or less did....but in the words of that classic song, " CAN'T GET ENOUGH..OF THAT FUNKY STUFF "

And I've paid the price, many times, for that "weakness."

But I ain't mad, people. I wouldn't change a thing.

8. Aha--you've taken a step on the road towards proving that thesis, at any rate!
And at the end of the day, you have the satisfaction of not wondering 'What if...!'

6. Tru DAT!
Nice to see you posting round these parts J. I met him when he ran Mc Govern's campaign. I was an intern for Lou Harris then.
I worked for Hart in the prelim stage here in Cali with some of Cranston's boys. I was, I think , ten at the time.

Speaking of monkey business, when's the next convention?

3. More than I'd like, to be honest.
I think what you might responding to in the ads, was the same tone of new ideas and promise of better things ahead. Obama is certianly viewed as doing the same now. But the wiki link comments on how that sort of slid into politics as usual.

They do have similar pluses and minuses. But Hart did his candidacy in. That won't be very likely to happen with Obama.
