More on John McCain and the "B" Word
by Todd Beeton, Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 09:40:02 AM EST

Since Tuesday, when the man David Brooks calls "among the finest men" allowed Hillary Clinton to be insulted in front of his face, the whole John McCain/Hillary Clinton situation has heated up. Talking Points Memo has been ably tracking the story.

First, as I wrote on Tuesday, John McCain stood by while a supporter of his referred to Senator Clinton as a "bitch" in a question to him demanding to know how Clinton can be defeated. McCain's response was notable for what it lacked, a refutation of the insult; in fact, on the contrary, he said:

2. We've always been led to believe it's how candidates handle
questions that help us decide if they are "Presidential". It's when Ted Kennedy was asked why he wants to be President, when Michael Dukakis was asked about his wife being raped and murdered, it's how Kerry responds to the Swift boat Liars. In all these three instances the media latched onto the way they handles the responses. Kennedy had no answer, Dukakis looked wooden and unfeeling, and Kerry seemed passive. But it wasn't like none of them had any answers, it was the appearance of the answers that bothered the media and they ran with it. Dukakis got croaked for just staying with his belief of no capital punishment and that wasn't enough. Now McCain has a problem with the media and their responses of how he handles a question? Sorry, but that boat sailed a long time ago. If anything McCain is getting off easy. He has defenders. I don't think a Democrat would.

3. Maine's two Senators (females) have endorsed McCain
Maybe we need to turn the heat up under them to find out why they support a man who accepts the bitch term to describe another female Senator.
