Edwards Walks the Line ! (Writers Guild strike)
Fun diary by an Edwards supporter who was there:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/11/17/0261/3196

Includes photos and video....some exerpts from redjet's diary:

I am going to apologize ahead of time because this diary is going to be a bit, well a lot, fan-girly. If you want substance, this isn’t it. Keep moving.

I’ve never met Edwards in person before. I’ve supported him since 2004 and have missed a few opportunities to see him in person. Yesterday I was lucky, very lucky. I went to the picket line for the WGA where Edwards came to lend his support.

But for the moment, enough about me.........

I also was able to overhear an interview with Assemblyman Paul Krekorian (D-43rd California) who was asked at the end of the interview; "John Edwards coming out today, photo-op or real?" To which Krekorian replied that Edwards was "for real" and gave a lengthy positive answer about Edwards and everything he has done for Unions and Union workers. Very nice answer indeed.

Three minutes or so of a great supportive go-get ‘em, speech, not a candidate vote-for-me speech, just I’m-here-with-you speech. He talked about the corporate lobbyists and about corporations trouncing on the working people, standing with workers every day as president, other stuff – well I didn’t take notes people. I mean, my God – he was right in front of me! I expected the first time I’d see him was from like 100 feet away not like, well, almost (dammit) in my lap!

Much more :hi:

1. I wish I could shake this feeling that the strike won't end
before the January caucuses. Having the likes of Leno, Colbert, and Stewart off the table can only help the Rethugs.

3. What a great speech and a wonderful diary.Edwards is truly a man of the people.
Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 02:02 PM by saracat
Once again, he is first for the workers. No other candidate cares as much about the workers as does Edwards. Some only care about corporate donors and lobbyists and their lack of interest proves it. Too busy collecting money in Beverly Hills and supporting the corporate masters the writers are picketing against!

The diary did include statements from Obama and Hillary supporting the WGA, which I thought was really classy of redjet, the "girly-fan" :D

4. Out of all
the candidates, Edwards remains the staunchest advocate of unions - and union members. He seeks to strengthen the power of unions and to correct unfair union practices, including those that don't benefit the individual worker.

Go Edwards!

who have a right to be treated as worthy of their time and toil.

Edwards owns that turf as much as any Democrat in my lifetime and I've been around awhile.

Open up the landscape and watch candidacies jostle for position on key issues, yes. But don't align our Democrats who are pro-labor with the pandering of the Republicans for the fundies. Your assessment allows for no better than that, and that's what makes it dead wrong.

30. edwards over all demeanor, distortions, speeches, attempts to hide from his record
redefine himself, are all fake. So, at this point, anything he does, especially something so high-profile, looks fake to me. I am certain there are lots of people on strike who could use his support--yet he goes where the cameras are.

31. You've misread the strikers' intentions. Whether the media films them or
not, their cause is history-defined and immediately urgent.

A candidate either endorses their position or does not endorse it, and it is the workers' perception of that candidate's understanding of their plight secondary to his/her support for their position that provides the hinge.

Local news or cable outlets can cover or ot not, but the point is the strike, why it is the action undertaken, and what is at stake in its outcome.

Edwards has garnered significant union support. Said support is not media-contingent.

It is from the workers themselves to a candidate who meets their criteria for leadership and empathy.

That's the starting point.

Update your file.

33. We do pretty good with the filin' here at our house. Here's a related
excerpt from 2003:

"The president says he wants to have a debate about values. The basic bargain that we make with the American people if you work hard, if you act responsibly, you can build a better life for yourself and for your families. This is the bargain that George Bush is breaking every single day. He comes from a place where wealth is inherited, not earned. He comes from a place where opportunity is hoarded, not shared.
This is going to be a debate about values, Mr. President. It's going to be a debate about the future of America and the kind of country we want. They, the Republicans and George Bush, they honor wealth. We honor the work that produces wealth. They fight to expand special privileges fore special interests. We fight for opportunity for everybody. We believe in taking responsibility. They believe in passing the buck to somebody else.

This is a fight for the working people of America. It is a fight for our values, and it is a fight we will win."

--John Edwards, AFSCME union debate. Iowa. May 17, 2003

16. Thanks Catchawave
For bringing this over here to DU.

I'm RedJet by the way. I signed up a while back on DU and can't remember why I didn't use RedJet. Sometimes it is already taken, or I had issues with the sign-up - anyway, I'm RedJet.

Meeting Edwards was amazing. I wrote the diary in a lighthearted way because there have been many diaries written about the strike.

I think what I came away with, other than the obvious giddiness, was how much his presence really uplifted the crowd. No matter how you look at it or how you feel about his participating, it meant a lot to those who were there on the picket line.

And they are the ones who we are talking about right now.

I think the feeling is that this is a hard upward battle for them. I heard one person say they were grateful someone came out because they needed all the support they could get.

Anyway, back to the girly stuff - he's gorgeous in person!

:)

And if someone wants to call me a suck up, I'll take it and gladly. But I don't think it was an accurate description of either Edwards or the Writers. Just my opinion.

28. Hey there, Catchawave. I'm just arriving at the good party you've begun
here in this thread.

I'm liking Edwards' candidacy even more than before and correspondent to the mainstream media's policy of marginalizing him, Kucinich, Biden, Dodd, Gravel, Richardson.

I'm liking the Kilimanjaro story. Not much oxygen up that far on that mountain, but the relationship he had with his son appeared to make the difference. That's top-drawer stamina for hiking but it's priceless instinct for parenting.

Two laywers raising four kids, then three kids. It seems to me John and Elizabeth did a hell of a good job.

I find myself counting the hours to January 3rd!

Very, very nice to see you on DU today.

55. Edwards, Miller Honored at AFL-CIO Organizing Summit
Last night, the AFL-CIO Organizing Summit took a break from strategy sessions to honor two men who have been stalwarts in the fight for workers’ rights: Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) and former Sen. John Edwards. The two received the Paul Wellstone Award, named in honor of the late senator from Minnesota, which the AFL-CIO established to highlight elected leaders who take a strong stand for workers’ freedom to form unions and who fight for social and economic justice.

For summit participants, this was a good chance to unwind, relax and get to know other organizers. During the hour-long reception before the dinner, hundreds of us talked about organizing and what has been happening at the summit, which ends today.

Luella McQueen, an AFSCME member from Jacksonsville, Fla., said the summit should have been even larger than the more than 600 organizers who are here:

We need to bring more people to these kinds of meetings. It’s been very interesting. We ought to get those volunteers who walked door-to-door, not just the leaders and top organizers. There’s still a lot to be done and we need everybody to be a part of it.
