Full video of Obama smackdown of Right-Wing voter!
For all the crap Obama is getting about this, if you watch the full video, ironically provided by Fox, it shows Obama to be respectful but passionate - the in your face passion Kerry lacked that ultimately let Bush define the terms of national security.

<http://cameron.blogs.foxnews.com/2007/11/19/obama-takes-the-tough-questions/>

This my friends, is what it's gonna take to break down the right-wing memos of fear and war-mongering. This is what we need in a candidate; to call BS when he sees it. I particularly liked how he basically said , "if we continue down the same path we mine as well sign up all our children" for Iran and the next country and the next country etc... That will play well with the moderate suburban folks who hate Bush but still don't trust Democrats with national security. Frame the debate away from fearing a Democrat will be weak on terror, to fearing a Republican warmonger who will draft our children and start WW3. The latter notion is definitely more frightening and will make the GOP primary politics of "who has the bigger balls" into a general election noose. Trust me, no one wants to see their kids in the streets of Tehran, no one.

See the last paragraph in the link above. ;)

After the event, Svoboda told a gaggle of press that the candidate didn’t answer all of her questions and that he didn’t have the experience to be president. No Democrat running, in Svoboda’s opinion, has strong national security credentials. But, she applauded him at the event’s conclusion and said he did “a good job.”

47. it was a bullshit question...
Look-- I'm leaning towards Sen. Clinton myself, but you've gotta admit it was a bullshit question. How does one address all the specific positions he has of both anti-terrorism and immigration in the span of one answer?

If someone asks specifically how a computer works and expects a fifteen second response, it's a bit obvious that it's either a set-up question or a bullshit question (or both).

Questions have the advantage of being simple more often than not, answers rarely have that same advantage...

35. Context is often enlightening
For myself, I would not pimp a clip of Senator Clinton or Senator Edwards or any candidate that took him or her at a moment open to misinterpretation, especially if there were a fuller, fairer version available. I would provide the one that gave a just showing of the remarks and tone in context. I would consider use of a cut up piece that makes him or her look anything worse than the actual behavior to be unacceptable candidate bashing. I wouldn't do it.

But knock yourself out, you are so determined :hi:

41. Perhaps a version will come out that satisfies both of us
The Fox video had one of those mics that dims the sound in the room often used so the candidate can be heard. But I don't see the kind of jump cuts as in the MSNBC video. The Fox visuals appear smooth to me. We'll have to see if someone provides one that confirms one or the other.

For those interested in what is true.

Obama Knee-Caps an Old Lady, and Other Iowa Tales...

I see that this video of Obama engaging a voter on terrorism and immigration is getting some play around the web. The title of the YouTube clip--"Obama yells at elderly Iowa voter"--tells you all you need to know about the context in which it's been circulating. (According to this site, Drudge linked to it earlier today, though I can't find it now.) Having attended the event in question yesterday, I can tell you that the video has been framed and edited in such a way as to misrepresent what actually happened. The woman in question was a Republican named Jane Svoboda, who asked her questions in a pretty sharp and mean-spirited way. Obama began to answer them in a perfectly calm tone. The woman proceeded to interrupt and hector him several times over the course of the response. Each time she did, he would grow more animated--not nasty by any stretch, just the way someone gets when they care quite a bit about an issue. It's true that at times he almost had to yell, but that was only to make himself heard above the cheering of the crowd, which was very much sympathetic to what he was saying and unsympathetic to the woman, who'd outed herself as a bit of a bully.

All of which is to say, "Obama yells at elderly Iowa voter" is almost completely backward as a description of what happened.

43. The Dean "scream" directional mic trick rears its ugly head again.
"he almost had to yell, but that was only to make himself heard above the cheering of the crowd"

The crowd noise was completely lost in the clip that was shown yesterday and presumably in the Fox clip as well. I hope Obama's team is well aware of the trick so they can nip it in the bud if a scream meme starts spreading.

37. Wow
I'm not an Obama supporter (as a gay man, I'm still turned off to him by the whole McClurkin controversy), but I think your last paragraph is spot on. We absolutely need a candidate who will speak clearly and with complete candor and will not allow the Repuke candidate to frame the debate. When we allow the debate to be framed for us, it's almost guaranteed we will lose the debate. If Obama has the courage to speak up and do this, then I say good on him.

And for what it's worth, I don't think he was yelling at that woman at all. I didn't even see him as disrespectful. He was just passionate about what he was saying.

You know I appreciate the link, and I also thought Obama did a great job with the question. But can you lose the "unlike that loser Kerry" attitude, because it's just wrong. I plan on supporting Obama on his own merits, without comparing him to another election, which was, I may add, a far different country than it is today.
