Romney camp denies role in anti-Mitt push polls
By Jessica Van Sack
Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - Updated 6h ago

Former Bay State Gov. Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign furiously denied rumors yesterday that his own supporters were involved in calls placed to voters in Iowa and New Hampshire that spread anti-Romney smears under the guise of conducting a poll.

Political strategists and bloggers slung accusations at Romney’s camp yesterday after a scathing article appeared in the National Review titled “Did Mitt Romney Push Poll Himself?” which identified several Romney supporters at Western Wats, a Utah-based firm believed to have made the calls. The practice of using phony polls to plant a negative message is commonly known as push-polling.
...

Among the questions asked during the 20-minute calls placed last week were whether the person polled knew Romney received Vietnam-era military deferments while serving in the Mormon missionary in France, that none of his sons served in the military and that the Mormon religion didn’t accept blacks as bishops until the 1970s.

The calls also included flattering questions about the military service of Sen. John McCain, whose camp immediately denied responsibility and filed a complaint with the New Hampshire attorney general Friday, as did Romney’s.

...

The National Review article cited sources who speculated Romney’s camp put the hit out on itself “because his campaign wanted polling data regarding the negative perception of his Mormon faith for internal use.” But others speculated a motivation to pre-empt attacks on Romney’s faith.

3. Agree
In Iowa we try get to the bottom of these kinds of things by asking to donate to the cause of the group in question. We find out who they are and where to write a check then follow the $ back to a particular campaign or front group for a campaign. The pugs in Iowa usually hire firms in the west like Idaho or Utah to do this dirty shit for them. If we could get this group to tell us who they are working for or who is sponsoring them we might get conclusive proof.

4. I don't agree
Im Mormon - while I am not an active member or believing member anymore I can guarantee you one thing - Mormons would never sell out their spiritual beliefs by using anti-mormon "talking points." The Book of Mormon is equal to the Bible according to members - it's only anti-mormons that claim otherwise - you would be very hard pressed to find a member that would be willing to sell one of their most sacred beliefs, even for a politician.

5. Mitt was pro choice
and pro gay marriage when he was elected in Massachusetts so I believe he is capable of anything and that includes violating church doctrine. That is my opinion and we will find out soon enough.

6. I was commenting about the pollers not Mitt
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 02:15 PM by FreeState
Remember you said Utah and Idaho where the polling is done - by people living in those states - both very Mormon states. Mitt does not represent Mormons any more than Gladis Knight does.

And just an FYI the church believes abortion should remain legal (rape/incest/mothers health). Thats been the church's position for years and years.

7. Unless Gladys Knight has become the representative since 1978. She was shit out of luck
before then.

"Until 1978, blacks were denied priesthood, also known as "full membership," in the Mormon Church."

8. You don't know much about Mormonism except the anti-Mormon talking points apparently
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 02:24 PM by FreeState
Women are not allowed to hold the priesthood at all in the Church - its a Patriarchy. Last time I checked Gladys Knight is a woman.
