Hillary got fired!
I just learned this and found it hilarious! Courageous -- and not what I'd expect from her --, but hilarious:

n 1969, Hillary graduated with departmental honors in political science. Stemming from the demands of some students, she became the first student in Wellesley College history to deliver their commencement address. According to reports by the Associated Press, her speech received a standing ovation lasting seven minutes. She was featured in an article published in Life magazine, due to the response to a part of her speech that criticized Senator Edward Brooke, who had spoken before her at the commencement; she also appeared on Irv Kupcinet's nationally-syndicated television talk show as well as in Illinois and New England newspapers.

(and now the funny part)

That summer, she worked her way across Alaska, washing dishes in Mount McKinley National Park and sliming salmon in a fish processing cannery in Valdez (which FIRED HER and shut down overnight when she COMPLAINED about unhealthy conditions).

...

for some reason I just find that funny

12. It could be true
But what does it matter?

To be honest I really don't see what this says or what it has to do with anything important. At absolute best it is one of those 'character stories' positive or negative, and not a very good one.

14. Bush spent a summer in Alaska
Of course, his job was arranged by family friends, didn't involve much work and got him out of the way of his dad. But the press ignored it so it had no effect. I wouldn't be surprised if the press tried to use this against Hillary, playing up the part about her getting fired.

Neil Bergt, The New York Times' "richest man in Alaska" in the '80s, gave W a summer job in 1974, when he was in between years at Harvard Business School. Bergt says he doesn't know why the young Bush—still living, by his own account, the "wild and woolly days"—wanted to come to Fairbanks, where the company was based. But a Houston construction executive contacted him and asked him to hire Bush, who has been described by professors and friends as an out-to-lunch business student. Bush's father was then the chairman of the Republican National Committee, installed by President Nixon, and Bush Sr. would wind up that summer appearing on the White House lawn when Nixon resigned, waved farewell, and climbed aboard the presidential helicopter for the last time. Bergt concedes that the Bush job was "a political hire."

In several wide-ranging interviews, Bergt oscillated between demands that the Voice pay him $250,000 for "the real story" that "only I can tell" about Bush and insisting that there was "no story here" and that Bush spent a quiet summer preparing a business plan for him. Asked why Bush preferred a summer in Alaska to Wall Street or Houston, Bergt suggested that the motive was nefarious, and that a full account could affect the election, adding: "I'm not talking without money."

15. I apologize
for Posting something that I found kinda cute and surprising. From now on, I'll stick to incredibly important, earth-shattering, live-or-die uber-political subjects only.

God forbid we laugh, smile, chuckle or guffaw on DU.

23. dont' you find the mental image
of HRC skinning a salmon -- or whatever in the hell it was -- funny? I have a hard time imagining that!

But, on the other hand, what one person finds funny, another person might find ... well, whatever. No harm done, in the end.

Hillary came from Republican origins. The story indicates that she is at heart a liberal. A budding little repuke wouldn't have complained. But then, most budding repukes wouldn't be working in a job like that in the first place.

Stories like this are good, IMO, because they reveal a person's character. It comes out in their early years. In American politics, to which so much is given over to image and the image-makers, little items like this are meaningful because they help us see beyond the facade.

Plus, I wasn't taking this too seriously. Comparing Hillary to Paris? How can you think I was serious?

27. She recently told that story
on David Letterman's show. He asked her whether she had gone to summer camp as a child and she said no. She said that she had worked the summers since the age of 13 and that her favorite summer job was after college when she went to Alaska to slime fish. She joked that sliming salmon prepared her for Washington politics.

28. Great post
I have a lot of problems with Hillary and her husband, but it's good to be reminded that they both are fundamentally coming from the right place. Their tactics I have many, many problems with. But to demonize them to the point of putting them in the same category as Darth, * and some others, no, that doesn't actually square with reality.

Thank you for this post.

33. Here's a bit more to add:
She was supposed to scoop out the entrails, but she began to get worried about the state of the fish.

"They were purple and black and yucky looking," she recalled. She questioned the owner about how long the fish had been dead, and he warned her to stop asking questions. But she continued asking questions, and was fired within a week.
