Edwards, Biden, Obama; I'd be fine with any of them. I'm getting to like Biden more than I thought I would. I do hope one of them cleans Hillary's clock in Iowa.

Also: Dodd is starting to look good, too.

168. That's my opinion as well.
IMO politicians can be put into 2 groups (though with fuzzy boundaries), leader-politicians and legislator-politicians. The skills, personality, and attitudes that made a good president are not necessarily the same ones that make a person a good congressperson.

84. this is also my dream
that each party's candidate would really be chosen, and the president would ultimately chosen, won the basis of who would really be the best president. Seems so elementary, doesn't it? But this important and simple concept seems to be utterly lost in the recent elections, and judging from the bizarre nature of the 2008 race so far, it looks like it's not a priority for 2008 either. . . No question at all that Gore and Kerry would have won by a landslide if people had kept this criterion in mind in 2000 and 2004 (well, they both won anyway, but. . sigh. ).

50. Thanks- I 've done a lot of thinking about who would be the
best leaders for this country and believe we have to go along with those who have had the most experience and have proved that they are true blue in the political sense. Some of us older voters have thought Biden would fit the ticket in past elections. Both he and Dodd have the vitality, consistency and honesty that this country sorely needs.

That's why I support Biden. I feel he is the right man for these times. Not only for his foreign policy experience and knowledge, but his ability to work with people and get things done. (Dodd too) But I have to confess, that I believe Obama has alot on the ball - very bright, very thoughtful.

40. So, I Did Some Calculations...
Edited on Sun Nov-25-07 09:36 PM by Steely_Dan
I went through this thread (up to this point) and awarded 3 points to the first choice, 2 points for the second choice and 1 point for the third choice. I even recorded those that only chose 1 or 2. Here are the results:

Joe Biden................. 30
Edwards ................. 26
Obama ................... 26
Dodd ..................... 10
Kucinich ................ 10
Clinton .................. 9
Richardson ............ 5

What does this tell you? It tells me that Biden has more support on this board than many of us might imagine. It also tells me that while many are passionate about their first choice, Biden's name is not far behind.

69. Edwards and Biden are at 96 and 95 respectively.
Dodd and Obama are at 94 and 93.

Then Kucinich, Gravel, and Richardson, respectively at 92, 91, and 90.

Senator Clinton at around an 80.

Bloomberg would be a 75 or so.

All the Pukes would be weighing in around '0.'

enormous gap between dennis and everyone else. dennis simply is the personification of my exact ideas and conceptions. i just wish i had the balls to go vegan (which i don't). edwards i like very much, i believe him to be pandering but he happens to be pandering to the right kind of people (me). he's a good man. but i need to truly believe he is sorry for his senate erm career. gravel actually came and spoke at nyu and is really cool. biden i want in the cabinet, not really as president. its really dennis for me. for GE too.

80. Probably Biden, Clinton, Dodd - without real enthusiasm for any of 'em
My actual rankings would be Clark, Gore, Feingold, and possibly Kerry before any of our current choices. I might be tempted to rank Dodd first of those running if he had any chance in Hell. My ranking Biden first is tentitive and my small way of giving him a boost. If he doesn't start moving up with more voters soon I face the odd prospect of technically supporting Clinton while planning to cast a protest message vote for someone to the left of her in the New York primary, since I figure the race will be over before then anyway. I thought my literal vote would go to Kucinich, but with the Ron Paul talk that is now on hold.

I am not pleased with my options this year. I would be drawn toward Obama more if he had more "seasoning" under his belt.

86. Richardson, Obama, or Kucinich.
I'm looking for a candidate who has a proven ability to get things done and a global vision that I can agree with. My preference is for someone who's actually done some of the things he or she has talked about. I also do not want to vote for someone who was responsible for getting us into this mess in Iraq.

I like Richardson because I believe that his experience has prepared him to do the almost herculean job of cleaning up after the Bush adminstration. He has international credibility, a good record on environmental issues and seems to make the most sense of the lot on immigration--once again a result of his experience as New Mexico's governor. His health care plan is not much better or worse than most of the others. I wish he were less of a free trader but you can't have everything.

I'd pretty much dismissed Barack Obama as too green for the job but I can't help but be impressed with the way he's run his campeign. He's moved up in my estimation--at least for today.

Dennis Kucinich is always spot on with the issues and if I can't get enthusiastic about a candidate with a chance to win I may just vote for Dennis to send them a message. I am also liking Biden more and more as the campaign goes on.

That's today. Tomorrow of course could be different.

Richardson tends to be the best fit for me on most policies. Every one of those silly little candidate position tests I take, he comes out on top usually followed by Kucinich.

On trade, Richardson cosponsored a bill to tie MFN status with China to improvements in human rights. He's held a position on tying trade to human rights to trade throughout his career and has moved much further to the left on other trade issues. He's against the Peru trade agreement.

I think he originally supported NAFTA because he thought he it would reduce illegal immigration. If the bill had been done right, it probably would have accomplished that. He also was the Deputy Democratic Whip in the house at the time and Clinton made passage of NAFTA one of his priorities. With the rise of the EU, I thought NAFTA was a good idea at the time. If we'd done it more like the EU, it would have probably benefited all three countries.

with Biden and Edwards both being good VP choices.

I'm not being glib here. Biden and Edwards are my second and third choices for President, and I had them in the subject line at first, but it's like Clinton-97% Biden-2% Edwards-1% in terms of weight so, for me anyway, the truth is it's really just Hillary. It's her time and it's America's time for her.

This is both an historical moment, a pivotal political moment, and a fundamental generational moment.
And Hillary is, by a huge margin, the only correct answer to any of those three considerations, let alone all three together.

I have a tie for first place here, followed up by Obama. As a caucus participant, I believe I will caucus for the least-represented among these three, and will do whatever I can to ensure that each of these groups remains viable and sends at least one delegate forward...

In all reality, I may caucus for any non-viable group if it means they will remain viable and prevent them from dispersing their support to other candidates (unless of course those candidates are Biden, Clinton, or Obama).

Follow me?

1)Biden
1)Clinton
3)Obama

ON EDIT: If you want to count my support, consider Biden #1, Clinton #2 for now.

Thanks!

1. gore (< who we know now isn't running)

2. kucinich

3. biden/obama/edwards (< i play musical candidates depending on my mood when i get up in the morning)

eta. for a qualifier - obama wins musical candidates most often based on his uncanny earnestness (or an oscar worthy performance of it) and his oration. it appeals to me. i love to listen to him speechify, but i'm not sure i want to commit yet. i like edwards' positions more sometimes, but earnest and eloquent he is not. smarmy used car salesman is hard for me to overcome even though my rational side knows better that personality isn't the be all and end all. when they don't fit my values close to 100% (kucinich is the only one who does that) then personality becomes more important to me. and when they both piss me off, biden steals the show. not the most interesting candidate by far, and probably 4th on my list among the declared candidates when it comes to issues, he's got the experience no one else has and not being a top tier candidate has more freedom to say what's on his mind.

117. Kucinich, Edwards, (Almost) Anyone Who Can Beat Hillary
Used to be I had a complex but elegant system regarding who I was going to vote for in the primaries.

If Hillary isn't a threat to win, vote Kucinich.
If Hillary is a threat to win and Edwards isn't competitive, vote for Obama, who probably would be.
If Hillary is a threat to win and Edwards IS competitive, vote for Edwards.

Unfortunately, after the whole pandering to religious nutters instead of the base of his own damn party, I don't think I can vote for Obama either. The difference between Obama and Hillary, as far as I'm concerned, is that I cannot bring myself to waste a vote on Hillary in the general election, whereas Obama has a (slim at this point) chance of convincing me otherwise.

But to be perfectly honest, I'm not even that excited about Kucinich or Edwards. What the hell is the matter with our party that this is the best we can do? An only vaguely pro-choice guy who, while on the ball most of the time, is widely seen as a complete loon for a variety of reasons and will never ever in a million years get elected; and an ex-lawyer that, while he's done some pretty good work in the past, he's still a lawyer and that's the kiss of death to a lot of people who might otherwise get behind him (leaving aside the whole issue of whether he's genuine or just really slick).

We need another FDR to fix this country after the last 25 years of failed policy (and before you bring up Clinton's eight: Don't Ask Don't Tell, Welfare 'reform', NAFTA, DOMA, DCMA, etc), and this is what we get? It does not fill me with a great deal of confidence regarding our chances for meaningful change come next November.

147. Today?
Kucinich, Biden, Edwards.

To be honest, it's DK, DK, and DK.

Biden, Edwards, and Richardson all run about even behind him.

156. Mine's changed.
Since Biden's going for public funding, Clinton's in top place,

Biden #2

Dodd #3

157. Why? I doubt he would do public financing in the general election.
It's not like he would be hurt in the GE.

158. I have to find the piece that kos wrote about Edwards
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 01:05 PM by seasonedblue
because I thought he made some good points about the disadvantage he'd be in after the convention, but before the GE started.

Here, this is what worries me about public funding:

"Based on winning the primary, this decision makes sense. But if it succeeds, we will have a handicapped nominee for a long, painful six months. The RNC, the GOP candidate, the conservative 527s (like Freedom Watch) will all be beating the shit out of our nominee, and without the ability to control message and directly fire back, we'll be at a gross disadvantage.

So what would Edwards do, depend on free media? Really? The same ones that trashed Gore and Kerry, and have already done a good number on Edwards? Rely on the good sense of the voting public? Please. If you can't talk to them, they listen to the people who can.

Money isn't everything in politics. But there's a difference being outspent $4 million (like in Montana's 2006 Senate race), or $9 million (like in Virginia's 2006 Senate race), and being outspent by $125 million. Kerry spent $175 million through the summer in 2004. Political inflation will likely make that number even bigger this time around.

For the Edwards plan to work and not hurt us, we would need:

* A ridiculously frugal Edwards effort, with nary a wasted dollar spent to win the nomination,
* Fundraising troubles for the RNC, the GOP nominee, and the conservative 527s,
* Gangbuster fundraising for the DNC and progressive 527s,
* A media willing to treat Edwards with respect and fairness,
* A public unusually resistant to typical GOP bullshit and scare tactics."

161. My analysis from this unscientific poll is that
Biden is the 2nd and 3rd choice for many DUers, since he never wins the pick-your-candidate polls, but does well here.
Also, Kucinich is not the 2nd and 3rd choice for many DUers, since he always wins the pick-your-candidate polls, but is 4th here.

So on DU, Edwards and Biden are probably our "consensus" candidates.

164. Skipos - I agree...
I was going to continue tabulating these number for another day and then sit down and start a thread which addresses the results of this thread. You have anticipated some of what I was going to say...I would like to hear what others are thinking about these results.

I'll probably write something tonight on the subject.

You might also note that many other DU polls have Biden doing better than I think many might have imagined.

ok, I'd take the other candidates over any of the pugs, but MY "top tier" is those two. Maybe I'd put Dodd in third.

What does that say about me? I pick three not-short white males.

Oh, well, so be it. I like them best.

1. Gravel
2. Kucinich
(really these are the only two I'd seriously consider supporting in any meaningful way)
3. Dodd

After them,

4. Edwards
5. Biden, Obama or Richardson (hard to pick between these 3 for me)
6. Clinton (who I would never, ever vote for-- I'd probably sooner vote for Paul)
