Obama open to legalization (for medical purposes) of marijuana
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/11/25/479649.aspx

When a voter asked Obama if he was for the legalization of medical marijuana, Obama said that he wasn't in favor of legalization without scientific evidence and tight controls. Citing his mother who died from cancer young, Obama compared marijuana to morphine saying there was little difference between the two.

"My attitude is if the science and the doctors suggest that the best palliative care and the way to relieve pain and suffering is medical marijuana then that's something I'm open to because there's no difference between that and morphine when it comes to just giving people relief from pain,” Obama said. “But I want to do it under strict guidelines. I want it prescribed in the same way that other painkillers or palliative drugs are prescribed.”

This sounds . . . sane.

1. decriminalize. period. stop putting pot smokers behind bars
the only thing it accomplishes is the further shredding of our social fabric. The so-called 'War on Drugs' has done nothing (unsurprisingly) to stem drug use, but has done great harm to tens-of-thousands -- or millions -- of working class families and individuals.

2. Cannabis is not like morphine at all.
That, IMO sounds INsane. It's that kind of reasoning that makes kids think heroin is no big deal.

3. yeah, they're not even in the same ball-park
morphine being a synthesized opiate, and marijuana being a low-grade hallucinogen.

4. true, I had a problem with that comment too........
marijuana, medical or otherwise, is nothing like morphene! Although maybe he meant it in the context of treating pain. From the comment, it's really not sure what he meant.

Morphene is highly addictive, marijuana is not.

8. He's talking about the effect his mom had as a terminal illness PAIN RELIEVER..

I take it you are not an Obama supporter?

You were reading what YOU thought the senator meant. Or actually, what you wanted the people here to assume he said.

9. Even as a pain reliever it's not in the same class..
Cannabis does little for pain if it's severe enough, morphine will pretty much take care of anything. They're not the same at all.. The chemical composition and effects on the body are completely different. That's all I was saying.

I support Obama, and Edwards, and DK, and Biden a little bit, and Gore a lot.

6. Marijuana and Opium are NOT drugs.
Edited on Mon Nov-26-07 11:33 AM by AlertLurker
Both are extracts from flowering plants. Coca is NOT a drug, either. It's a leaf from a woody plant. All of the above are used harmlessly by millions of people all over the world.

COCAINE is a DRUG.
MARINOL is a DRUG
HEROIN is a DRUG.

GOD CREATED PLANTS.
MEN CREATED DRUGS.

7. I don't think marijuana is harmful enough to regulate it like morphine
but it's a start. I'm sure people in medical marijuana states will appreciate someone in the White House who won't send the feds after them.

10. It's a step in the right direction
although marijuana is far less of a dangerous drug than morphine. You're not going to get addicted to marijuana and you won't die of a marijuana overdose.
