Susan Davis reports on the presidential race.
Ballot Box Despite their best efforts, four Democratic candidates might end up on the Michigan Jan. 15 primary ballot after all.
Sen. Barack Obama, Sen. Joe Biden, John Edwards, and Gov. Bill Richardson removed themselves from the ballot earlier this year in protest after Michigan violated national party rules and expedited its primary date, which was formalized last week by the Michigan Supreme Court. Sens. Hillary Clinton and Chris Dodd opted to remain on the ballot. But the state House is slated to take up a bill today that would put all of the names on the ballots, which are set to be printed as soon as this weekend.
Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon told the Detroit Free Press that he was confident he had the votes to approve the measure. Prominent Michigan Democrats, including Sen. Carl Levin and Debbie Dingell, are advocating such a move as part of their effort to make the state a bigger player on the presidential stage. However, Democratic candidates have largely avoided campaigning in the state because of the DNC rule violation. The Michigan contest would be the third major event following the Jan. 3 Iowa Caucus and the Jan. 8 New Hampshire primary.
