Tom Vilsack underestimates Oprah's influence in Iowa
Radio Iowa reported today that former Gov. Tom Vilsack scoffed at the idea that Oprah would sway Iowans or draw huge crowds in Iowa. "According to Vilsack, not many Iowa women get to watch daytime television because they're working. Winfrey made her support of Obama public earlier this year and hosted a fundraiser at her home in California, bringing in $3 million for Obama's campaign."

So just how popular is the queen of daytime talk in the Hawkeye State? According to KCCI, the station that airs Oprah in the Des Moines/Ames region which covers central Iowa, about 40,000 people watch her show daily. The Oprah Winfrey Show is more popular than the prime time viewership of either the ABC (39,000) or NBC (38,000) affiliates in the same media market.

Also, more people watch Oprah than the morning, noon or 5 p.m. newscasts of the NBC affiliate in Des Moines, and more watch her than any of the any of the newscasts on the ABC affiliate.

Her program is ranked the 12th highest in the country out of the top 100 media markets.

“Hopefully, we can attract some people who might not otherwise be interested in politics, who aren't regular viewers of C-SPAN," Obama said today, per NBC's Abby Livingston, of Oprah's support. "But on the other hand, once they're there, I'm able to talk to them about critical issues like health care, home foreclosures and things that affect their lives on a day-to-day basis. So, I'm very grateful that she's taken the time to do this. I think it'll be fun.”

1. Vilsack scoffs at Oprah?
Well, his T-Vil line of colognes could possibly put her out of business, I suppose. MKJ

2. Her supporting Obama aside.
I have seen Oprah on and off for years. I don't buy her books because she does not have the same taste in reading as I do. I know a lot of people who are not influenced by her. Of course a lot of people like the idea of her stomping for Obama, but.....it ain't gonna be all that big...I say it over and over, the reason they like her show, they WANT THE GIFTS SHE GIVES AWAY......

10. You guys don't get why Oprah is so important to Obama...

Her viewers/supporters tend to be either women or black. Two groups that are natural constituencies for Hillary Clinton. Well, the black people who support Oprah are probably the same types that support Hillary --- upwardly mobile, etc. Her biggest impact are will come among women who are upwardly mobile, who are Hillary's largest supporting bloc.

So she doesn't have to sway all of them. But let's say she sways five percent (a very small number you will agree, and hardly impossible), well that means Hillary LOSES five percent and Obama GAINS five percent. This represents a ten percent differential. If she sways ten percent, Hillary LOSES ten percent and Obama GAINS ten percent. This represents a twenty percent differential.

It's all plus for Obama. There is no downside for him.

This is a very good thing. I would much rather have Oprah supporting me than have Vilsak's support.

11. I don't think it is the gifts.
After all, how many people get them? Only a few, given the size of her audience.

She does have influence. You may not read the same books she does, but many, many people do. She has put authors on the map. Some very good authors, who would never have had such wide circulation, have had their financial fortunes changed by Oprah. I worked in a library for years. I did quite a bit of adult selection. Books I would never have purchased for popular consumption were requested over and over. We had to purchase them, because their was such demand. And most of them deserved the attention, too.

Of course you know people who are not influenced by Oprah. So do I. But that does not negate her influence.

3. Newsflash: Just because some people may watch and get enjoyment out of her talk show
doesn't necessarily translate into votes for Obama.

I think it is selling Iowans short, to suggest that just because they watch Oprah's show, they will be inclined to vote for her preferred candidate for President.

People are capable of thinking on their own, without being told by Oprah (or any other talk show host) who to vote for.

4. Way to slam the stay at home moms and shift workers in IA, Vilsack.
Good going. :eyes:

He's in for a big surprise when he sees what a big draw she is with all those "non-working" folks!

8. It's more than the prime time viewership of the major networks according to the article
All the cable choices are really diluting the market share I guess. I predict that an Oprah appearance will draw a crowd of 5-10K. Maybe more.

15. Well, I have watched Oprah's show.....
and have nothing against her, but she wouldn't sway my vote no matter who she was endorsing. I find it somewhat insulting to assume that people would be so vacuous as to vote for Obama simply because she endorses him. Voting for him because you like his platform is fine, but voting for him because a talk show hostess is endorsing him is a pathetic reason to vote for anyone.
