McHenry vs. Congress
McHenry vs. Congress
Republican critical of his own party's actions in recent years
WALKER LUNDY
Special to the Observer
When he speaks in Mooresville instead of Congress, Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry sounds like he doesn't think much of Congress or Republicans. "Republicans were at the trough" when they held the majority in Congress, he said. "They had power for the sake of power."

He said, for example, that the Department of Education under President Bush has doubled in size and its average bureaucrat now makes $90,000 a year. "There are so many duplicate programs (in the federal government), it's crazy."

"After being in the majority for 12 years, they (the Republicans) were fat and happy," he said. "The American people realized it and threw them out."

Wow! Even Republicans are running against the Republican Party these days.

It made me wonder if aliens had invaded the body of this normally rock-ribbed conservative Republican.

Youngest member

He was speaking to a group called Probus, comprised of about 25 Lake Norman area retirees.McHenry, 31, is the youngest member of Congress. He represents 10 western N.C. counties from southern Iredell to the Tennessee border to the South Carolina border.

When he spoke to us, he wore the standard conservative blue blazer, blue shirt and wine-colored tie. At his age, he looked more like an insurance salesman than a member of Congress.

1. I really don't have the words to express how much McHenry disgusts me.
This guy has toed the party line and voted with the Repukes 91.3% of the time (source), and now he's critical of the stances his party has taken? If McHenry really felt that the Repukes were going in the wrong direction, wouldn't he have shown it with, oh I dunno, his voting record? He was a member of the 109th Congress, he could have spoken up then.

The only reason he's speaking up now is because he knows which way the wind is blowing and knows that the Repukes are going to be hurting after next year's election. His criticisms are being made in an attempt to save his job, nothing more.

Then again, NC-10 is a fairly red district and McHenry sailed to election both times. If he's running scared, then you know other Repukes are in trouble. :)

4. I agree he disgusts me too. Last week he was on Washington Journal
and when a caller mentioned the huge deficit McHenry said to the effect that, well the DEMS control congress so what do you expect? I almost threw something he made me so angry! So, last week he was blaming the DEMS and this week he figured out which way the wind is blowing. A slimey fraud in my book.

3. Rove and Bush put him in office
This is a perfect example of what Bush wanted in Congress, he came in the district with pockets filled with republican money and college republicans to help him win. This area hard shell republican, had a favorite son they intended to take the seat. It was a close race with just a few votes difference in the primary..Local Sheriff for about 35 years was his opponent. McHenry was hand picked by Bush and Rove.
