1. What a tease. No details yet?
Is he another toe-tapper? Or a diaper guy? Fetishist?

3. We can't accuse Lott of something we don't know he did. We can accuse him of
being a right-wing embodiment of Richard Nixon's "Southern strategy" and hope that the appointment Haley Barbour makes to replace him won't be worse than Lott on key issues.

I don't hold out hope that Barbour is inclined to appoint anyone close to a moderate. If only the next GOP resignation would be from a state with a Democratic governor.

6. You make a good point
but I also think that the systematic destruction of the myth that these guys are the rightous is good for the electorate to see, especially the religious Republican electorate. Whoever is appointed will be under scrutiny.

7. It's a new phase of the old freakshow atmosphere with the media.
Governor Barbour is mentioned as a veep nom for the GOP.

I wonder what Lott is up to. If there is no truth to the sex rumor, maybe he's going to run for president.

Although he looks a bit weary in the recent photos, like someone who's had enough of electoral politics.

8. I think Mississippi law requires a special election
There was some discussion on the boards last night to that effect. I know the Constitution says the governor appoints the replacement, but states are allowed to determine how the governor must choose the replacement to be appointed, and Mississippi has apparently gone the way of the special election. With an election to be held within 90 days of Lott's actual resignation, the Democrats have an outside chance to pick up this seat if turnout can be maximized.

9. Any chance at all like that, we'll take. I certainly won't miss Trent Lott.
Was John Stennis the last Democrat to be elected to the Senate from Mississippi?

12. Well, sure, if they follow the law. But we are talking a RepubliKlan
governor here. Not sure that laws apply to them.

11. HuiffingtonPost says they got an email from the guy saying it is false.
The guy who was supposed to be Lott's "friend" has received death threats. So we still don't know for sure. But there has to be something to it. Else how did it get so specific with the fact and the "boy friend".
