Black voters tilt toward Clinton: study
Hillary Clinton is overwhelmingly popular with black voters, drawing higher approval ratings than the only major African-American candidate running for president, according to a study released today by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

Clinton's own record as First Lady and New York senator -- along with her marriage to former President Bill Clinton, who is very popular among black voters -- earned her an 83 percent approval rating among likely black voters, compared to 75 percent who ranked Illinois Senator Barack Obama positively, the study said.

It's not that black voters don't like Obama as much, said David Bositis, senior research director for the Washington-based group. But African-Americans -- especially those in the South -- haven't seen black candidates do well statewide, and are concerned Obama can't win, Bositis said.

By a two-to-one margin, black voters said they valued ``commitment to change'' over experience in public office, a trend that would seem to favor Obama, who has cast himself as the agent of change in the race for the Democratic nomination. But Clinton, seen by voters as the stronger candidate to win the general election, still scored higher, according to the poll of 750 African-Americans who said they were likely to participate in primaries and caucuses.

ibid

I'd say two of the three reasons she's so popular among Black voters are have nothing to do with who she is and everything to do with who her husband is. And if Bill Clinton wasn't her husband, I seriously doubt she'd have become a Senator. This is not a sexist statement-it's an obvious fact (IMO). ;) Still, Obama is only 8% behind her and that's before OPRAH hits the trail to make Black people, women, and everyone else for that matter take a look at him and change their support from the spouse of "the first Black president" to the guy who's done work for civil rights for over 20 years.

If she wasn't married to Bill, her support among Black voters would be equal to Kuciinich's support among Black voters.

"I know (as in 'I have the knowledge) you and I have no reason or right to second guess their stated reasons for supporting Hillary."

I'm pointing out that 2 out of 3 of their stated reasons are directly connected to her husband.

Bullshit. The OP says they support Clinton because of her own record as First Lady and New York senator -- along with her marriage to former President Bill Clinton.

I said "They support her based on her history, not her skin color."

You said "I don't believe that for a second. If she wasn't married to Bill, her support among Black voters would be equal to Kuciinich's support among Black voters."

Your intent is to say the only reason they support her is because of Bill - which contradicts what they actually said.

Your words: "I know you and I have no reason or right to second guess their stated reasons for supporting Hillary."

It doesn't matter how you meant it-you said those words.

They said they support her because of her record when she was First Lady (Bill's wife) and because she's married to Bill Clinton. If she wasn't married to Bill, she wouldn't have been first lady.

I sit by what I said.

My words: "I know (as in 'I have the knowledge') you and I (the two of us) have no reason or right to second guess their stated reasons for supporting Hillary."

I'm not responsible for your misunderstanding or reading comprehension.

Of course you sit by what you said. To admit otherwise would put a dent in the Obamalogic.

I said what I said. If you want to take issue with me because I feel that it has more to do with her husband then that's your perogative. I take issue with that and dispute it's validity just like I dispute the validity of most polls I've seen this early in the election.

I'm sorry, that's what I believe.

There are many blacks who are offended by the nickname given her husband, "The First Black President". Many feel his policies were not all positive for black people. Even she mentions her husband's record when she campaigns.

It's true that the Clintons are popular among African Americans but there is also a vocal segment who take issue with their policies.

15. An obvious fact? Yikes. Learn what a fact is.
Conjecturing that Clinton would never have become a Senator if she hadn't married Bill Clinton is exactly that- conjecture, supposition, guessing. It's anything but a fact. Do you know *gasp* that there are 16 women Senators? Are you suggesting that Hillary Clinton isn't as bright, ambitious and politically savvy as Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Maria Cantwell or Diane Feinstein? It actually is sexist of you to make that statement, as well as arrogant and ignorant.

People are saying what they know but you won't believe it because you are dependent on all the articles that you continue to post on this board.

When I read many of your posts I get the feeling that you think you need to guide other people who don't think the correct way. That's subjective and go apply to many sides.

Now, if you said that wanted to move too fast and are too radical you might have a point.

Why you keep insisting that people think black people are naive and liars is very interesting.

42. There goes the media again . . . playing the race card!
They seem to have no problem defining this presidential campaign in terms of race, dissecting black voters' views, assessing how black candidates will do and pontificating about whether a candidates' race will be a detriment.

But just let a BLACK PERSON mention race in connection with this campaign - or suggest that a candidate's race might be a help or a hindrance and we're bombarded with accusations that we're PLAYING THE RACE CARD!!!!

Amazing.

45. Well having Biden in the race probably limits most people options
That leaves Obama, Clinton, Edwards and Kucinich who doesn't really get a lot of face time.

I'm just waiting for Biden to make another stupid racist remark and his subsequent drop out from the race. That will at least make things interesting between Kucinich, Clinton, Obama and Edwards. I often wonder if Biden realizes that the only purpose he serves in this race is to shift voters to Clinton.

He's certainly not much of an alternative to the top three. As a matter of fact, on many issues he's 100 times worse than they are or adequatly equal.

If the article is correct, and many blacks are concerned about Obama's electability, then his winning mostly white Iowa might assuage those concerns. Nothing convinces as effectively as success.

This is why Obama has put all of his eggs in the Iowa basket

125. You're not blaming Clinton for this, are you?
The increase in rents has nothing to do with Bill Clinton renting office space there. It is a phenomenon that is happening all over the country wherever white folks decide that a neighborhood that has been held together by black folks (and neglected and ignored by everyone else) is after all a really cool place to live. They move in, get into bidding wars over apartments and buildings they wouldn't have gone near five years ago, open a Starbucks on every corner, push out many of the black businesses, and price the real estate and property taxes out of the range of the people who have kept the neighborhood alive over the years. THAT'S why the rents have gone up, not because Bill Clinton rented office space - something that was welcomed and appreciated by the community.

Yes, he was welcomed and appreciated by most but not all in the community. There were indeed protests. They weren't large protests but everyone was not happy with his arrival. What I've felt is the perception by many that all black people love Clinton and that he was the First Black President.
