Assume for a second that the next Democratic President gets 52% of the vote
If he or she does so, then he or she will do better than every single Democrat who ran, win or lose since 1948 except LBJ. Thus, I think it is an upper bound for the percentage of the vote we can expect a Democrat to get. LGBT voters make up about 6% of the voting population. We are the third most loyal group of voters (behind blacks and Jews). If gays vote for the Democrat at the rate they did in 2000 and 2004 they will vote 75% for the Democrat. That is 4.5% of the total electorate. That is nearly 9% of the total Democratic vote. If the next Democrat does as well as Bill Clinton did in 92 the percent of the gay vote becomes 90% and the total electorate becomes 5.4%. That translates to nearly 11% of the total Democratic vote. Between 1 out of 11 and 1 out of 9 of Democratic votes will come from LGBT voters. We aren't statistically insignificant. Just setting the record straight, so to speak.

1. thank you
I hate seeing people get marginalized regardless of statistics, but it's also good to see the numbers.

2. Thank you for this, dsc.
I know that we are not "statistically insignificant" as some might imply, but it's nice to see that spelled out so plainly as you have above.

Thank you!
