Debunked Edwards TV ad still running constantly in New Hampshire
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 08:36 AM by MethuenProgressive
In constant rotation on WMUR TV out of Manchester, NH is the Edwards ad where he claims "I'm going to use my power as president to take your health care away from you."
As noted several days ago on DU, and featured on the Congressional Quarterly and St. Petersburg Times' "PolitiFact" website, he can't do what he's promising. Politifact checked his TV ad back on Nov 12th and gave it a "Pants On Fire" rating on the Truth meter. (Edwards gets 'mostly true', 'half true', and 'true' ratings on other issues.) http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/personalities/john-edwards/

"When I'm president I'm going to say to members of Congress and members of my administration, including my cabinet: I'm glad that you have health care coverage and your family has health care coverage," Edwards says. "But if you don't pass universal health care by July of 2009 – in six months – I'm going to use my power as president to take your health care away from you."
Cue the wild applause.
The problem with this statement is that the president can't just "take away" health care from Congress.
“Health care for Congress and the administration is passed by statute. The president can’t repeal a law on his own,” said Don Ritchie, associate historian of the Senate Historical Office.
“Congress has the power of the purse and passes legislation. It’s the president who’s dependent on Congress to get legislation passed," he said.
In the meantime, we find Edwards' lordly pronouncement in his TV ad to border on the absurd. As a former member of the U.S. senate, he should know better. For that reason, we give him the rare Pants on Fire ruling.

This ad plays at least twice each day this week on the morning news, ran twice during last night's 11 PM news, and at least once during ABC's Nightline.
Bogus claim, publicly debunked, getting major air play on NH's top TV news.
Just how uninformed does Edwards hope New Hampshire voters are?

4. Edwards has major TV ad campaign debunked.
And devout Edwards fans can't stand it.
Too bad. So sad.

16. It was never "debunked"
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 10:58 AM by Bleachers7
Because there's nothing to debunk. He can keep his promise, though he needs congressional assistance. That's no different than almost any other campaign promise.

BTW, I am not an Edwards supporter.

Edit: And this doesn't even get into the arguments about the 27th amendmant. I would look forward to a challenge. It would be good for all of us.

2. You just don't understand.
The people can do what Edwards will pursue. With all of America's eyes on congress, it will be up to congress what they do. Keep health care for themselves only, or give it to America as well.

"lordly pronouncement" "absurd" "rare Pants on Fire ruling"
It says a lot about the Edwards campaign that this ad stays on the air.

12. Before you go, use your Ninga powers to show how Congressional Quarterly is wrong?
You can't claim bias, as they give him 'true' rulings too.

5. He's already explained that.
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 08:42 AM by AndyA
He's going to put pressure on Congress to address this issue. He will tell Americans, "Your Congress person doesn't think you're entitled to the same health care they have. Call them, write to them, tell them if you can't have it, they can't either."

It will be a major disaster for Congress, and about time I might add. Edwards will be able to use his power as President to take health care away from Congress by putting intense pressure on them to DO SOMETHING TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE TO ALL AMERICANS.

I don't think anyone thinks Edwards will just wave a magic wand and take away the health care from Congress.

Is this really all you have?

Good grief. :eyes:

8. "I'll use my Presidential Magic Wand!" Does Edwards really think he gets a wand?
Edwards: "I'm going to use my power as president to take your health care away from you."
You "I don't think anyone thinks Edwards will just wave a magic wand and take away the health care from Congress."

Apparently, Edwards is the only one who thinks he gets a wand.

15. You're seeing things that aren't there.
I was using wand as an example, obviously. :eyes:

To clean up the mess Bush is going to leave in his wake, the next President - regardless of who they are - may need at least a wand, if not more.

10. He was here in Reno 3 weeks ago and said this and defined it as "pressure"
too funny that people waste time on something that needs to be done. Take the candy away from the fat cats on the public's dole who do nothing for the public they tax.

9. The pont of the ad regardless if he is able to take away their health
care or not as it will never get to that point which anyone with any common sense knows. However, there is nothing wrong with the ad and the point is being made which most people agree with as I have heard comments from those at work about why can't we have as good of healthcare as those in congress who supposedly work for us.

The ad makes the point about healthcare problems and I am sure the NH voters think the same way.

Bogus claim, debunked ad, running constantly in key state.
Says a lot about the Edwards campaign.

14. The Congressional Quarterly site truth-checks all candidates, including Richardson.
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 09:17 AM by MethuenProgressive
So claims of bias are unfounded.
edit to add link to Richardson's rulings (including two 'false' rulings):
