Rasmussen: Huckabee tied with Giuliani at 18%. Hillary Clinton continues to lose ground, as well

Tuesday, December 04, 2007

With less than a month to go before the Iowa caucuses, the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that Rudy Giuliani has fallen back in the pack in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination. Giuliani’s support has fallen to 18% and four other candidates are within six percentage points of the lead. Mike Huckabee is enjoying an amazing surge and now shares the top spot with Giuliani at 18%. Close behind are John McCain at 14%, Fred Thompson at 13%, and Mitt Romney at 12%. Ron Paul attracts 7% of Likely Republican Primary voters nationwide and no other Republican candidate reaches 2% (see recent daily numbers).

In the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination, Clinton continues to lose ground as well. The former First Lady now attracts 35% of the vote, down from 41% a week ago and 43% two weeks ago. Today’s result matches the lowest level of support recorded for Clinton since Rasmussen Reports began daily tracking in mid-July (see recent daily numbers).

While Clinton has lost ground, Barack Obama’s support remains steady at 23%. John Edwards gained two points on Tuesday to 17% while Bill Richardson is the top choice for 7% of Likely Democratic Primary Voters nationwide. No other Democratic candidate tops 3% (see recent daily numbers).

Results for the Presidential Tracking Poll are obtained through nightly telephone interviews and reported on a four-day rolling average basis. Next update scheduled for Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Eastern.

3. This is as clear an indication as any...
That the storyline of Hillary's recent stumbles and tightening of the race in Iowa has gone national. The press has been pushing this more negative frame on her since the Philly debate at the end of october and they continue to push the view that she is in trouble. Still, no one can say she is anything worse than tied in Iowa. If she's behind, she's behind by at most a point or two. Her political resiliency continues to defy her critics in the press.

7. Seriously. This victimization meme is getting old.

Welcome to politics, American style. Media-projected image is a major part of the equation. If Hillary and her camp haven't figured out how to deal with whatever they knew was coming, they only have themselves to blame. By the way, the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" deflection won't work anymore.

9. Don't Take My Word Take Joe Trippi's Word
"Two hundred fifty million dollars couldn't buy the positive press coverage Barack Obama is getting"

Oh, and is it your position that George Bush* beat Al Gore fair and square, and the press was neutral in that battle?

15. The media are what they are.
Every campaign knows they are critical to success in this "image is everything" political era.

Granted, Obama has received some glowing press reports lately. Apparently, he has capitalized on that *priceless* support.

On your second question: Nobody said anything about "fair and square" and the press is never "neutral"...though their bias is not always manifested in so-called liberal or conservative directions. The media seek out and run with simpleton narratives. Election 2000 was no different.

17. Yeah, Gore Guilded The Lily
The press took a decent guy who "guilds the lily" as many decent folks do and turned him into a compulsive liar that can't be trusted...

Hillary Clinton plays the silly games that (all) politicians play and she is turned into a mendacious shrew by the press who will do anything to win...

But hey, the press hated Nixon's and Bill Clinton's gut and they triumphed... Both triumphed through pure will but Clinton had God given charisma...

10. It is not personal concern for Clinton as victim
It is concern over the fact that the media is actively promoting the one top tier Democrat that cannot possibly be elected.

12. This Will Be Revealed In The Fullness Of Time
I do think there are examples of candidates triumphing over a hostile press... Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton come to mind...That being said I can think of a lot more examples succumbing to a hostile press; John Kerry and Al Gore come immediately to mind...

Oh well, it is sad to see the lambs innocently being led to their slaughter... The media is doing their best to promote a candidate who can't win a general election while also ensuring the candidate that can win a general election is so "dirtied" up that candidate might not be able to win a general election either...

At this point I am willing to throw my hands up in the air and say the media won and hope against hope that Bill Richardson breaks out of the pack...

his two-month low-point.

These are national numbers which don't really mean much since there isn't a national primary and all these national figures will go out the window after real voters make real ballot commitments in Iowa and New Hampshire, but these numbers are still nice to see.
