SOUTHWEST IOWA NEWSPAPER: EDWARDS “REPRESENTS THE BEST OF WHAT THIS COUNTRY HAS TO OFFER”
From email:

Endorsement Praises Edwards for “Championing the cause of the little guy” and Highlights Edwards’ Rural Support

Des Moines, Iowa – Senator John Edwards today received the endorsement of Valley News Today, a daily newspaper in Shenandoah, Iowa. The paper, which covers a rural southwestern Iowa community, does not typically endorse presidential candidates and has not done so in recent presidential primaries. The paper’s endorsement reflects Edwards’ appeal to rural America and his commitment to making sure Iowans in every part of the state know where he stands on the important issues facing our country. Edwards is the only candidate to visit and take questions from Iowans in all 99 counties twice, and has announced the public support of more than 1,000 rural Iowans.

“As the only Democratic candidate with rural roots, Edwards knows first hand about the daily trials and tribulations of the working poor,” reads the endorsement. “As a result of his upbringing, he has by far the most specific, most progressive and most far-reaching ideas to improve our nation.”

The endorsement comes as Edwards continues to gain momentum in Iowa. Earlier this week, Edwards received the endorsement of Congressman Bruce Braley, the most senior Iowa Democrat to endorse a candidate. Last month, Edwards became the first candidate to announce steering committees in all 99 counties, reaffirming the growing strength of his statewide organization.

You can read the endorsement at: http://www.valleynewstoday.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=190...

The full text of the Valley News Today endorsement is below:

Edwards has clear vision for America
Valley News Today, December 7, 2007

There are many reasons why we’re supporting John Edwards as the Democratic nominee for President – not the least of which is his proven ability to unite voters from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Unlike his Democratic challengers, Edwards’ support doesn’t come from a single demographic, but rather from all demographics.

Simply put, he represents the best of what this country has to offer.

If given the opportunity, we believe the former senator from North Carolina will work tirelessly to fight for the little guy as he has done for the past 30 years.

As the only Democratic candidate with rural roots, Edwards knows first hand about the daily trials and tribulations of the working poor. As a result of his upbringing, he has by far the most specific, most progressive and most far-reaching ideas to improve our nation.

Born the son of a blue collar mill worker, Edwards learned about the importance of hard work and perseverance from his parents, who taught their son to roll up his sleeves and fight for the things he believed in.

That tenacity helped push him to become the first member of his family to attend college – eventually earning a law degree from the University of North Carolina.
<!----> <!---->

For more than two decades, Edwards dedicated his career to representing the little guy. He earned a name for himself as a lawyer by his willingness to stand up against – and ultimately defeat – the powerful insurance industry and their armies of lawyers.

His passionate advocacy for people like the folks who worked in the mill with his father earned him respect and recognition across the country.

Twenty years later, he’s still championing the cause of the little guy by being an outspoken advocate against poverty.

In the 2004 campaign, Edwards brought the plight of the working poor to the front of our American conscience by speaking out about the “two Americas” – one for people at the top who have everything they need and one for everybody else who struggle to get by.

Edwards’ powerful message continues to resonate with voters all across America – particularly in Iowa where he has spent the past four years crisscrossing the state to bring his message to each of our 99 counties.

As a result of his time spent here, we believe he has developed a true understanding of what matters most to us.

Among other things, he has vowed to create a true universal health care system that covers everyone in America, brings down costs, and creates more choices and security.

And if Congress won’t cooperate, he has promised to do everything within his power to take away their own government-provided health care.

John Edwards is a family man who, if elected, will be the first president since John F. Kennedy to bring young children with him to the White House.

And we think that’s a good thing.

Each morning when he rises, he will have his children, Jack and Emma, to remind him how important each decision he makes really is to our future generations.

Edwards isn’t afraid to speak out against the political machine that has corrupted our system for years and has pledged as a candidate to refuse contributions from Washington lobbyists – a personal decision that is an important first step towards true campaign finance reform.

In an unusually strong field of contenders, Edwards is by far the least polarizing of the other top tier candidates and will clearly provide Democrats the best chance of defeating the Republicans next November.

Vote for John Edwards on Jan. 3.

3. Thank You For This & Thank You Catchawave For Again Doing Such
GREAT homework! I gotta check back with JRE group more often!! My husband is an Edwards supporter as well as many of our friends, but he has this "problem" with me blogging so much and shows off his chauvinistic streak when he "checks in" to see if I'm at my PC!!

He's such a good hard working man, and is the neighborhood "handyman" and doesn't quite understand my need for intellectual stimulus!! He understands manual labor and I'm thankful for that, but that's not ALL there is in life! I work very hard myself doing landscaping and caring for all the plants and trees in our yard, but I need my "political" fix too!

Glad I can type fast, and don't always get back when I really want to. So to all of you who keep "me" informed.... THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

And, Go, Johnny Go!!!

11. They also endorsed Huckabee
http://www.valleynewstoday.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=19094211&BRD=2703&PAG=461&dept_id=555144&rfi=6
Here are their reasons:

He believes Roe v. Wade should be overturned and that a constitutional amendment should be passed protecting the sanctity of life and making all abortions illegal.

Huckabee is a strong supporter of the right to bear arms and is opposed to banning assault weapons.

Specifically, Huckabee has said he would like to "take our country back for those who belong here."

Huckabee realizes our nation's health care system is broken, but doesn't believe the answer lies in universal health care mandated by the federal government.

He insists the war in Iraq is an integral part of what he refers to as America's "generational, ideological" war on terror. He believes setting a timetable for withdrawal is a mistake and instead is focused on winning the war

A former Southern Baptist minister, Huckabee's faith is an important part of his life and unlike the other candidates, he has not tried to separate his faith from his personal and professional lives.

In other words, all the reasons we hate him.
So it looks like this is a far-right newspaper and they are picking Edwards because he'll be the easiest one to beat.

Unfortunately, most of us know, newspapers will usually carry editorials from both a right and a left prospective.

Why do you people always attack the source, and never the message?

17. If this was Fox News or the NY Post
giving this endorsement, would you attack the source or the endorsement?

Obviously this is a much smaller paper, so their bias isn't as obvious, but it still looks pretty clear.

Most papers like this with a clear GOP bias will endorse the strongest Republican and the weakest Democrat.

20. Perhaps I would-
But my point is, every time I post an endorsement for my candidate, or post an article on him, it is attacked based on the source of the information, never the information. They never talk about what they say, only who said it.

I've had Dave Sirota challenged here, he's hardly a right winger. I've seen Harry Belafonte attacked. Ed Schultz attacked. The list goes on.

Funny thing is, it's always because we've been "lead astray" or some nonsense like that. Say what you like about the article, but unless it is Faux News, then how much sense dose it really make to attack a small newspaper in s/w Iowa?

I post positive news about my guy. That's what I do. Most of the time when I do this, I face an onslaught of people who think I'm mis-led, or just plain stupid.

I'm really trying hard not to be a hater, but every day, the struggle gets worse.

23. Because
They are doing the best they can to make Edwards look bad. They are running scared! :scared:

Hillary is dropping in the polls, Edwards is gaining ground, and the people are starting to realize that Hillary is not what she claims, and Edwards is the one with a "real" plan to take this country back from corporate America, and make the needed changes that we need.

They can't bring her numbers up by speaking about the issues, heck they don't even know how she stands on the issues since she never says, so the next best thing they can do is try and "attack" the candidates that are getting the public to listen to them, and the more the public hears John Edwards, the more they like! :applause:

Most papers do endorse a candidate for both parties and from the left and right perspectives.

I basically read each endorsement as to why Edwards and Huckabee would be the best person to lead their party.

32. I assumed we were all Democrats here
so we'd all hate those things I listed and Huckabee, but I guess I was wrong.

If they're endorsing based on who's best to lead their party instead of who's best to lead this country, their endorsement is worthless to me. And if you don't know about newspapers endorsing the weakest candidate of the opposing party, you obviously don't pay close attention to politics.

Tell your friends to ignore the corporate controlled media "pushing" the CORPORATE candidate(s). This paper has got it right.

John Edwards is the winner if there ever was one who unabashedly claimed responsibility for being the mainsail for the middle class.
