How much are the top Democratic presidential candidates' net worth? Here are the facts...
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 01:42 AM by ClarkUSA
Money magazine features an analysis of the Democratic top presidential candidates’ finances -- how much they have, where
they got it and how they invest it. Here's the results in a nutshell:

Clinton's Net Worth: $34.9 million
Edwards' Net Worth: $54.7 million
Obama's Net Worth: $1.3 million

For the details, go here: http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/moneymag/0712/gallery.candidates.moneymag/index.html

It surprised me to see that Obama is a pauper compared to the entire field of candidates, although he's come far from the days he and his mom
used food stamps.

Interesting stuff.

1. I am glad for the Clintons
They were probably the least wealthy couple to come to the White House. They did not even have their own home - they lived in the governor's mansion in Arkansas.

When they left the White House, with all their legal bills, they were in the hole for a million dollars, I think.

So I am glad when books and speeches made them millionaires. They deserve it.

2. I agree. But we are all playing let's pretend when we think Obama does not have a truer sence
of the rest of us, the other side and those other people.

6. While Clinton may mock Obama's comment about his childhood, The realities of his life experiences
is what distinguishes him from the pack.

I couldn't agree with you more. :toast:

I hope voters realize that, too... on Jan. 3!

14. He didn't have a deprived childhood, did he? He grew up in Hawaii, I thought!
And he went to a private (and fairly expensive, too) prep school there...and thence to an ivy league university setting.

5. You're right.
It was reported at the time of his election that Clinton was the poorest president. His governor's salary was one of the lowest in the nation at $35K. Hillary had to become the family bread winner. Ironically, their entire net worth went to pay the Paula Jones settlement, money that Hillary had earned through years of hard work.

9. Net worth between $350,000-$1 million
Income was $268,000 in 1990. About the same as the Obamas really.

24. Retirement funds that could not be touched
Their holdings include bank accounts, bonds, mutual funds and investment partnerships. The largest asset is Mrs. Clinton's share of her firm's profit sharing and retirement plan, valued between $100,001 and $250,000.

Still, the poorest president, when you compare him to the Bushies, Reagan, even Carter had his own farm.

And... they actually lost money on the Whitewater deal.

7. I know he's not one of the Top candidates, but here's Biden's info --
having spent his entire life in public service and having made the decision to not invest in the stock market lest his holdings influence his votes:
He's STILL one of us.

Sen.Joe Biden(D-Del.)

Net worth: $100,000-$150,000

Details: Biden has spent virtually his whole life in public service and does not have much else aside from investments in a small array of mutual funds and cash accounts. He received a $112,000 advance from Random House for a book in 2005.

Who knows what may happen? I'm not a Biden supporter because of many reasons but it's clear he hasn't cashed in personally.

11. Biden is no more one of us than any of the rest of them
He has been in the Senate for 34 years and earned total salary of $3.4 million over that time. Senators are not exactly making minimum wage or even median family income. Kinda surprising that he apparently never bought a home either.

15. That's $100k per year. Nancy's worth $94 million, and so is Dianne.
Nancy has a home in San Francisco, one in Lake Tahoe, and a $35 million vinyard home in the Napa Valley (her business lobbyist in DC is bush's brother in law).

Dianne has a $16.5 million home in San Francisco, one at Lake Tahoe and one in Hawaii.

16. The vast majority of Pelosi's and Feinstein's wealth is from their husbands' net worth
Pelosi has been married forever to her childhood sweetheart who turned out to be a real-estate whiz and Feinstein is married to a military-industrial
complex guy who's made out well during the past five years, so your comparison of these two women to Biden is apples and oranges.

18. Facts are facts, what ever you take from it. Apples & oranges don't change anything.
Dianne & Nancy happen to be exceedingly wealthy. Biden isn't. What ever you see as meaning or lack of meaning is your own business. The fact that Nancy's business lobbyist is bush's brother-in-law may or may not matter to you.

26. they were probably both worth that BEFORE they got elected
My point is that $3.4 million is more than more families made over the last 34 years. It puts him in the 70th percentile, not median or lower middle class.

17. 3.4 million over 34 years is an indication that he never cashed in
on his Senate career. Most Senators do. That in itself is commendable.

25. I do not know that he never cashed in
I only totalled his salary over the years to compare to the $200,000 or so that I have made in the 22 years since I graduated from college. I know that he made at least that much.

What does he have against graft and kickbacks that he hasn't made any money after all those years in the Senate?

He hasn't forgotten where he came from, or that far too many others are in situations as bad or even worse.

As a community organizer, a state senator and now, a U.S. Senator? Do we know how he got his money? That's weird.

28. Obama is practically middle class, and the most in tune
with what's going on. Upper middle class, of course, but he certainly can't walk into whatever store he likes.
