Al Gore sure was an idiot letting a no talent like Madonna headline a Live Earth concert!
</sarcasm>

I don't know how Madonna plays in Iowa or South Carolina, but she's a great talent and has been more right on the issues than our average Democratic congressperson.

She is also an important part of the youth of the majority of American women under 40, which I am told is an important voting bloc. In fact, she was a role model to a hell of a lot of women who turned out very well.

And the album LIKE A PRAYER is a singularly fine work of art.

I leave it to Hillary as to whether she would want to enlist Madonna's aid, but I'm guessing that even Iowans have some affection for Madonna. (Most of the Iowans who think Madonna is a big city har-lot might not be caucusing Democratic anyway.)

1. Madonna SUCKS...she's a no-talent hack and publicity hound
She's a no talent hack who has used her looks and shock tactics to get by her whole career...

TALENT is:

Natalie Maines
Carol King
Elton John
Jackson Browne
Sheryl Crow
Don Henley
Bonnie Raitt

you know... people who can actually sing, play musical instruments and WRITE THEIR OWN MUSIC AND LYRICS

Madonna can't hold a candle to these people.

2. Well, it's all a matter of taste, isn't it?
I'm no fan of Madonna, but declaring her a no talent hack while countering with Don Henley is .... subjective.

I don't like the Eagles. Never have. I think they have no talent, but I cannot deny their success or star power.

Sometimes these conversations become very bizarre.

4. Madonna is an entertainer and businesswoman
She never claimed to be the best singer, but she is a stellar entertainer...her shows are pretty incomparable.

Not to mention that the controversy she caused in the 80s paved the way for people like Maines.

Get a grip.

If BUSINESS skills were the criteria then where do I go to buy a ticket to a Warren Buffet, George Soros, or Bill Gates concert?

15. I said she was a stellar ENTERTAINER
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 09:56 PM by Harvey Korman
Which she is. That is a talent, whether you recognize it or not. And she does write many of her own songs, and has had countless hits since the eighties till today. That isn't easy, for any artist.

The irony is that most of the people you listed as "real" musicians probably have a lot of respect for her.

22. No it's NOT... and NO she's NOT stellar...
You're confusing production with talent...there's plenty of talentless "entertainers" in the world... My TV would be full of them every night of the week if I bothered to watch network television...

My test for talent: Artist (alleged artist) unplugged...

Madonna bombs when she's performing all alone on a stage by herself and an instrument like she did in the 2004 benefit concert for the Tsunami victims doing John Lenon's "Imagine"...

21. I dislike the replacement of form for substance...
The current generation of pop music stars exists largely based on looks and shock tactics - not talent.

The singer-songwriters of the 60's and 70's were far better because they had to get by on ACTUAL talent.

Madonna is just the poster child for MTV destroying music and thus gets singled out by me.

There ARE some talented people from the 90's and 00's but they are few and far between as an hour of MTV will demonstrate...

9. Your may be confused as to her contributions to her work
She writes her own stuff, and has for a long time. She's not a musical genius, but she's not a bimbo being handed other people's material to sing, either.

Elton John is a great idol of mine, even though he doesn't write his own lyrics.

I don't think of Mick Jagger as any kind of musician, but I wouldn't say Keith Richards is the only creative Stone.

Sheryl Crow is fantastic, and I am confident she would identify Madonna as a wonderful song-writer.

I am a singer-songwriter devotee and love everyone on your list. And Like A Prayer was the first non-Elvis Costello album to be my top album pick since 1979.

14. Trust me, my brother is a big fan and she is NOT impressive...
her music is just a bunch of computerized synthetic dance music without substance.

I've been forced to listen to more Madonna music than I'll ever want to hear.

The only thing she was ever good at was the movie "Evita" and hey that's because she IS Evita personality wise...not much of a stretch for her...

Sheryl Crow kicks Madonna's ass on all counts.

Oh and sorry but I forgot Elvis Costello on my list of TALENTED people...

not hesitate to say Madonna has a lot of talent.

Some to add to your list:

Aimee Mann
Fiona Apple
Joe Jackson
Duke Ellington
Trent Reznor
Elvis Costello
George Gershwin
Cole Porter
Richard Thompson
Burt Bacharach
Johnny Cash
Stevie Wonder

etc.
etc.

I mean, no slam on Huey. He's got some great tunes to his credit, and sold a lot of records -- deservedly so. But if Madonna is just an 80's pop princess, what's Huey? Oy.

Then there's the matter of putting him on the same list as Dylan... :grr:

But that's a separate flame-war, I suppose. :D

I tend to think that he did a far better job at increasing future participation by younger folks by getting The Foo Fighters on that bill and in the slot that they played.

Besides: they shredded. Grohl ruled the day. He pwned Wembley. It was his house. He walked out of there with the pink slip for the place.

I can't believe Sting let them ruin the song that way.

FYI, Sting, you don't need to remix your songs to make them "relevant."

Still, no one compared to Pink Floyd at Live 8. B-)

44. You didn't pay enough attention then.
From provocative videos to headline-making risqué concerts, Madonna is known for pushing people's buttons. Now it's her actions off stage that are putting her back in the center of controversy.

In the fall of 2006, Madonna traveled to the African nation of Malawi where she is building an orphan care center with her foundation Raising Malawi. Soon after her trip, news broke that she and husband, Guy Ritchie, were adopting a 13-month-old boy named David.

Local human rights groups have since gone to court, challenging the Malawian government's decision to allow Madonna to adopt David. They believe that Madonna used her wealth and celebrity to fast track the adoption. News outlets have also recently reported that David's birth father, whom originally was in support of the adoption, claims to not have fully understood what he was saying when he encouraged the adoption.

I was just waiting to see which card you would play:

"Where were these people when David was struggling in the orphanage? These so-called human rights groups should leave my baby alone," said Banda, a subsistence farmer. "As father I have OK'd this, I have no problem. The village has no problem. Who are they to cause trouble? Please let them stop."
