A dozen mysteries - suddenly S O L V E D

To those of us in the “democratic wing of the Democratic Party” many of the actions of our party leaders have been incomprehensible. They have emboldened the would-be-fascists of the Administration, immunized war criminals from punishment, and set the world on an inexorable course toward a nuclear Armageddon in the Middle East.

But why?

• Why rubber-stamp the funding for a failed war that Americans want ended?
• Why revise the FISA laws to permit more spying on our citizens?
• Why give “get-out-of-jail” cards to the Tel Com companies who spied on us?
• Why install an Attorney General who doesn’t know what torture is?
• Why censure MoveOn for exercising free speech?
• Why revoke the fundamental human right of habeas corpus?
• And why take impeachment “off the table”?

Some among our rank and file have proclaimed the strategic “brilliance” of such anti-democratic and immoral political maneuvering. Others have speculated about our leadership being subjected to bribery and blackmail.

The answer, as it turns out, is simple: As the Washington Post reported 4 days ago, our Democratic leadership is directly complicit in Bush Administration war crimes. As such, they have no desire, nor standing, nor safety to object.

Hill Briefed on Waterboarding in 2002
Sunday, December 9, 2007

In September 2002 … the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was given a virtual tour of the CIA's overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk. … (including) waterboarding… no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder…"

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/08/AR2007120801664.html?hpid=topnews

That, my friends, is our “opposition party”.

Which begs the question, if Nancy knew in 2002 about the torture, and the secret prisons, what did she know about “Gitmo-izing” Abu Ghraib? about breaking the FISA laws? about data-mining into our private lives?

What is your favorite candidate saying about this?

And most important: what, as Democrats, and as patriotic Americans, are we going to DO about it?

2. "What are we going to do about it," you ask
We will hold our noses and vote as The Party orders us to vote, because The Party adamantly refuses to support the candidates we actually want, such as Dennis Kucinich or Ned Lamont. We will bend over and rejoice in getting raped because it is far better to be pillaged by Democrats than be pillaged by Republicans. I mean, after all, who else are we going to vote for?

Pardon me a moment, I feel the need to vomit, then go into a corner somewhere and sob hysterically for a while.

Seriously... maybe I'll just give in and go be a libertarian, since the government isn't doing much to get my sympathy anymore, and at least it would be less able to hurt people that way

6. OK I do have doubts
I have doubts about the accuracy of Pelosi's involvement in the waterboarding thing...

However I do share the posters question sabout the following concerns:

• Why rubber-stamp the funding for a failed war that Americans want ended?
• Why revise the FISA laws to permit more spying on our citizens?
• Why give “get-out-of-jail” cards to the Tel Com companies who spied on us?
• Why install an Attorney General who doesn’t know what torture is?
• Why censure MoveOn for exercising free speech?
• Why revoke the fundamental human right of habeas corpus?
• And why take impeachment “off the table”?

I want to know why they aren't standing up on these things. I mean come the fuck off of it!

9. Please add the "Secret Free Trade Deal"
Shortly after inheriting The Gavel, Pelosi sanctioned a "Secret Free Trade Deal" written by Lobbyists, negotiated directly with Bush behind the backs of the Democratic Caucus without input from LABOR, Human Rights, or Environmental Concerns.

OK, Children. Can we say "SELL OUT"?

5. From the link
n September 2002, four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA's overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.

Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said.

10. You're implying this admin would be HONEST about what they do there?
Honestly that's pretty naive to assume that.

12. just enough truth to co-opt the opposition

Far from "naive", it's pure Rove-style strategic genius. It's the same thinking that lead this Administration to "embed" the media into the military. Before that it would have appeared naive to think they would give so much access to the media during a war.

No one is suggesting that they're "honest". By showing Nancy some of what they were up to (certainly not all), under circumstances in which she would be disinclined to object, they bought immunity for themselves, and leverage over her.
