Should a candidate's religion be an issue if s/he was an active, adult member
of a racist church in the past?

Should we treat a candidate who, as an adult, promoted his church's racist doctrine, with the same respect we treat candidates espousing other religions?

Does the fact that church leaders were eventually inspired to reject the racist doctrine give all the followers who once believed it a pass?

1. What's the difference?
We accept candidates who are members of, or who pander to, churches/denominations that currently actively denigrate LGBTs and work to prevent them from having equal rights. So what's the difference between that and a candidate whose church was racist in the past?
