Obama talks faith in 'Music Man’s' church

CNN Producer Mike Roselli captured this photo of Obama in Algona, Iowa Sunday.

MASON CITY, Iowa (CNN) – Presidential hopeful Barack Obama told worshipers Sunday that he wasn’t raised in a church, but “came to Christ” during his years as a community organizer in Chicago.

“During this holiday season, and during the political season, I am continually reminded that the values I learned in the scriptures and at church … can be applied outside of church every single day,” the Illinois Democratic senator told attendees of the First Congregation United Church of Christ on this gray and snowy morning in the Hawkeye State. This church, in particular, seemed an appropriate venue for a Christmas season appearance. Meredith Wilson, who wrote “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,” and “The Music Man,” attended this church.

For the past 40 years, parishioners have had a tradition of tossing mittens, hats and scarves — all intended as donations to the poor — onto a church Christmas tree. Obama had a pretty good toss, and joked that his days of playing basketball helped him. “I am confident of my skills,” he said.

Obama's stop came in the midst of a six-day swing that will take him to more than 20 cities in the Hawkeye State, and will end in Des Moines on Tuesday.

2. We've got trouble, right here in Mason City.
That's trouble with a capital T, that rhymes P and that stands for pool.

The very words coming from a Democratic candidate makes me cringe.

But at least he was at a UCC church this time.

4. When Clinton talks about her faith everyone calls her a republican. Now Obama is doing it...
let's see if he gets the same reaction.

Muslim and a terrorist supporter or Manchurian candidate.

There are even Democrats who believe that crap. One wrote a letter to the editor in an Iowa newspaper and another one told a reporter in Nevada that Obama was a Muslim. Both were Clinton supporters. I'm not even counting the two people working or volunteering for her campaign who forwarded the smear e-mails.

12. OMFG. That has nothing to do with this. I will agree that in the instances you
mentioned Clinton supporters did some stoopid fucked up shit. But that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about here.

crap flying around both above and below the surface.

edit to add - My Mom spoke to her 87 year old father last night. He is a Democrat. He is starting to go downhill health and mind-wise but they were talking about politics. He told her the Obama is a muslim crap. She told him it isn't true. He doesn't get e-mail. He lives in retirement home. I can't believe the number of Democrats I've seen in the past couple of weeks who actually seem to have bought into this. It may be a coincidence but they all said they are supporting Hillary (even my Grandfather). I can't believe it. People voting based on lies but it is Democrats not Republicans. I'm starting to view the coincidences a little cynically.

I'll find the link that shows the letter to the editor and the Clinton supporter at a Hillary rally in Nevada.

Ok - here is one - http://www.observer.com/2007/hillary-supporters-obama-being-muslim

I don't know if I'll have time to hunt down the Iowa letter to the editor.

14. No he doesn't. He had the anti-gay gospel singer. Everyone knows. CNN already
reported that he's a Christian not a Muslim. It was a big thing WAY back. Everyone who knows or wants to know or would be swayed by it already knows his religion.

You just can't except it. There is a double standard on this issue.
