Clinton Invites Voters to 'Inspect' Her

DUNLAP, Iowa (AP) — Standing atop a stage in a livestock auction barn, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton likened the experience to her quest to woo undecided voters in the closing days before Iowa's pivotal caucuses.

"I've been to cattle barns before and sales before, in Arkansas, but I've never felt like I was the one that was being bid on," Clinton told a crowd in western Iowa. "I know you're going to inspect me. You can look inside my mouth if you want. I hope by the end of my time with you I can make the case for my candidacy and to ask you to consider caucusing for me."

The former first lady made her comments during the launch of a five-day campaign blitz across Iowa less than three weeks before the state's January 3 caucuses. Buoyed by the endorsement of the state's largest newspaper, Clinton said she "could not be more pumped up" and that her campaign had regained its momentum after several shaky weeks.

The endorsement in Sunday's Des Moines Register gave a huge lift to the Clinton team as it fights to stem the surging momentum of her lead rival, Barack Obama. Polls have shown a tight three-way contest between Clinton, Obama and John Edwards in Iowa with Obama leading slightly in some surveys. Meanwhile, Clinton's once formidable lead in other early state polls like New Hampshire and South Carolina has also appeared to vanish.

Or anywhere near a farm, methinks.

She apparently knows her audience a heck of a lot better than you do.

30. I've been to Iowa many times
I've been in Iowa several times this year and was there for the 2004 caucus. I also lived on a farm in Virginia for a bit years ago.

You may think she was being cute or whatever... good for you...

Where do you suppose that term originated?

Do a little Google search. You might learn something.

13. There's something bizarre about that comment, no question

But then, Hil and Bill have a certain other-worldly streak about them - I think it is related to their overwhelming desperation
to return to the White House...I predict a divorce is in the cards if she doesn't get these nominations...Not necessarily spurred by Bill, just by the rage & frustration they will both feel...

16. That's Regular Folk Talk As Imagined By Irregular People
That said, she could not get away with saying that in the South, and you certainly wouldn't hear Obama saying it after 400 years of real human beings on the auction block.

In any case, this was clearly a prepared photo op event, which makes you wonder who her speechwriters are.

27. If Obama Got on an Auction Block And Asked You to Check His Mouth?
It wouldn't be so funny, considering that Americans from Africa were treated as chattel property for hundreds of years.

Secondly, as a feminist, Clinton knows that women have been put on stages - literal and figurative - throughout history for "examination." It's a pretty backwards (and just plain weird) comment, however you slice it.

Lots of good use of humor doesn't translate outside of the spontaneous context of the moment when it happened. Lighten up people.

24. I really don't think anyone is "criticizing".. I just think maybe
Hillary doesn't do comedy well. Or it just didn't translate well into print media, whatever. I'm certain everyone here knows she is joking and I wish people wouldn't be so immediately defensive. It's a light-hearted moment..
