Obama says something he may regret
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2007/12/obamaqte.html

Obama, in Iowa, just said something he might regret

One of the reasons national politicians have a reputation for speaking so circumspectly and carefully, even murkily, is because events can and often do change in unforeseen ways, leaving that uncareful quote sticking out there in adverse ways.

Yet that didn't stop Barack Obama this afternoon. There he was alongside the Mississippi River, with Illinois in sight just across the water, at the 80-year-old Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg, Iowa, where Guy Lombardo, Lawrence Welk and Herman's Hermits have performed over the years. Obama was speaking to about 350 onlookers including The Times' political veteran Mark Z. Barabak. He was wrapping up his remarks and a lengthy Q&A session, urging folks to sign pledge cards to help his campaign and caucus on Jan. 3.

Suddenly, out come these three declarative sentences:

"You in Iowa have this extraordinary privilege of choosing who the next president of the United States is going to be. Whoever wins this caucus is likely to win the nomination and is likely to win the presidency. What a powerful, profound decision that is for you to make."

Yikes! That's like guaranteeing a win the night before the big game or predicting your own demise. Put those words under one of those magnets on your refrigerator door and check it again on the morning of Jan. 4. By then, it'll make the young presidential wannabe look either prescient -- or doomed.

1. Obama is not a scripted candidate... he spoke in a straightforward manner, which is refreshing
And I, for one, agree with him, as do many others.

2. Nice pantload
He didn't say who was going to win the caucus vote.

Hill-a-copters sure are desperate these days.

3. Maybe going around with Oprah Winfrey has gone a bit to his head.
It was a stupid thing to say, but of no consequence. It certainly doesn't alter my opinion of him-- but he may regret having said it if he doesn't come in first.

5. You make NO sense. He was only saying the Iowan voters have power...
he didn't say HE would win. He pointed out the importance of their vote and naturally, wants them to vote for HIM.

12. I think you need to read those 3 sentences again
It doesn't matter if he didn't say HE would win. His statements are totally bizarre, just as they stand.

I'm still waiting to see this profound statement that he may "live to regret."

Geez. I clicked on this link, thinking that he had really messed up and said
some shameful remark.

What's next...

"Obama has Cheetos for lunch!!!"

7. Sounds to me like Obama has the Iowa caucus confused with Election Day of next November!
I can't believe he said that. Who in their right mind would ever tell Iowa caucus goers that they have the priviledge of choosing the next president? Wow, talk about a desperate thing for him to say.

10. Sounds like you're confused...
Who won the Iowa caucus? Oh, that's right...Kerry. And Obama followed by saying, "Whoever wins this caucus is likely to win the nomination and is likely to win the presidency."

What's the problem?

Other than the fact that he's the biggest threat to Hillary right now?
Honest question.

17. I'm not against him
I will even support him and work for him if he wins the nom.

I am just extremely supportive of Hillary and feel it in my bones that we will lose in November if Barack is the nominee.

I want us to win. That is all.

It has a way of sounding particularly profound.
But people love it when Edwards comes out sounding as if no corporation will again operate in the U.S. under his watch. What happens when the inevitable happens and when he begins to go to work at best it is incremental. Maybe when people don't see the dramatic changes they expected he becomes a lame duck president very quickly.
If someone wants to be ridiculous they can write that editorial.
C'mon. It's all up to interpretation. Politics has evolved to a point where so many people are experts about what everyone else thinks or should think about the various campaigns.

I am so sad because my most positive involvement with elections has been to work on a democratic education process. "Listeners" get the benefit of the doubt when they evaluate campaign info.

Let candidates do their thing and give people a chance to sort it out for themselves. The assumption that people are dumb and that we or some newspaper editor needs to give them an interpretation is BS.

19. Wow, I'm not sure everybody here understood what you were saying
which is that if he loses those words could hurt him bad.

The reason he said it is that if he loses, he is pretty much screwed. Hillary's support is much higher across the board. If he can't win here, he's done. That on the other hand is not true of Hillary, she has the money and support to pull victory out if if she loses, thanks to her support in other states.

Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 06:05 PM by ClarkUSA
I asked you "what Iowan doesn't like the sound of that." And you replied, "None, I bet"

SO which is it?

As for NH voters, I can imagine many of them understand what Obama is saying... and he did qualify his statement later with "likely".

Thanks for your "concern" though. :eyes:

32. New Hampshirites are just going to love that
Usually they fall right in lockstep with what their political gurus - the voters in Iowa - indicate is the correct nominee.

But now with Obama telling the Iowa voters that they're "The Ones" along with, of course, Obama himself, those New Hampshire primary voters will probably just decide, out of deference to their inconsequentiality, on not even holding a primary.

Gobama!
