Biden, Clinton and Obama could have focused the attention of the nation
on the FISA bill, retroactive immunity for telecoms, spying on Americans before 9/11, and other bushco crimes, if they had chosen to do so.

Because they are all presidential candidates, they had an unparalleled opportunity to really put this issue under the spotlight. They have pretty damned big megaphones at the moment, and they could potentially have made a real difference by informing people just how culpable the administration is.

They didn't think it was worth stopping campaigning to do it.

4. You don't THINK it affects your vote, but it's going to make your vote more lonely!

of being labeled as 'soft on terror' and saw the prospect of campaign ads that say 'so-and-so voted to weaken our nations security'...

9. It takes 60 votes to break a fillibuster.
Unless their vote was to break a fillibuster, then they weren't needed.

11. Did you read the OP??
This was about a missed opportunity to put this issue right in front of America's face and to highlight bushco crimes. It's not merely about the votes.

to support him...

20. They all know the math coming into every vote.
Name a time in the past 10 years, where debate on the floor has changed the outcome of a Senate vote. It's all kabuki. It sucks, but I'm not going to pretend it surprises me.

Until we get the White House back, this is the disappointing crap we'll have to put up with, but there's no reason to believe that their presence would have changed a thing.

21. I'm afraid you have over simplified the situation... They specifically told...
Senator Dodd that they would be there to support him, and didn't bother to show up... Why would anyone trust them to lead the country with that attitude?

29. I'm not going to parse the meaning of "support", but
no-vote is the same as voting no on cloiture.

I would like to have seen them there, but it would not have changed the outcome.

12. I'm extremely pissed off at all three of these Senators... They specifically...
told Dodd that they would be there to support his filibuster and were no-shows... That to me is enough to change the way I was planning to vote.

23. That wouldn't guarantee media coverage
Any one of these candidates can make this a huge issue today, except Kucinich. I don't think any of them should be let off the hook, and Reid should have to explain himself.

27. Good point.. instead, we're seeing Hardball and CNN coverage
of who's saying what about who today and poll numbers. Unfreakin believable. And Dodd is standing up on the floor of the Senate pouring his heart out. Excuse me while I go cry for a bit.

28. What can he do?
Aside from saying he's against retroactive immunity, he has no ability to take to the Senate floor in the kind of concerted effort I'm talking about. It's funny that anyone would accuse me of giving Edwards a pass.

33. Hold a special press conference
Challenge Hillary directly. Put up a radio ad.

I don't think taking the Senate floor has any special power anymore. There would have to be a coordinated party effort on this. I want to know why there isn't, or who Reid is appeasing.

I'm not saying you're giving Edwards a pass for any partisan purpose. I think you're giving individual senators more power than any one of them really has.

and even if they didn't they have plenty of money to buy a friggin' plane ticket. Are you suggesting that they can only travel by private jet???

31. You can't be serious. That's an excuse? Well, HRC has a private helicopter
and certainly can afford a plane ticket. Oprah could afford to fly Barack back. Biden, not so much, but I'm fairly certain he too can afford a plane ticket. No excuse. No pass on this one for any of them

- currently campaigning for President in Iowa - to return to support our civil rights on the floor of the Senate. I'll even go first class. I'm series ! :-)

36. My excuse for Biden is...
...he is not a millionaire like the other candidates. He's just getting by with the endorsements and website money. He can't afford big time television ads and has to make up votes by traveling every day. Even though, he should have done his job, you can't compare his situation to Hilary and Obama. I'm sorry if this affects people's votes because you can't generalize all three candidates into a group. Different situations.
