Huckabee denies subliminal Christmas message

Is the bookshelf behind Huckabee in his Christmas ad a subliminal message?

(CNN) — Republican Mike Huckabee poked fun at critics who said a bookshelf in his new Christmas-themed ad that appeared to highlight the shape of a cross was meant to send a subliminal message. “Actually I will confess this, if you play this spot backwards it says ‘Paul is Dead, Paul is Dead, Paul is Dead,’” the presidential candidate joked to reporters in Houston Tuesday. “So the next thing you know, someone will be playing it backwards to find out the subliminal messages that are really there.”

The ad is intended for the early-voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

The former Arkansas governor said the spot was last-minute and ad-libbed: “They had a bookshelf behind me, a bookshelf. So now I have these people saying, ‘ahhh there was a subtle message there,’” said Huckabee. “….I never cease to be amazed at the manner in which people will try to dissect the simplest messages, can't even say ‘Merry Christmas’ anymore without somebody getting all upset about it.”

The former Baptist minister also shot back at some who said the spot should have been more inclusive, and that he should have wished voters “Happy Holidays.” “I don’t know what else to call Christmas, last time I checked that is what we celebrate. If somebody can give me a way to get around that and do it honestly, then perhaps that’s what Christmas is,” said Huckabee. “The very word Christmas comes from the contraction of 'Christ Mass' — the worship of Christ – again, change the word if we don't want to talk about it, but that’s what it symbolizes and represents.”

20. Is anyone so gullible that they believe anything that comes out
of his mouth? Seriously. I really do not get how anyone can believe someone who has been proven to have lied time and time again in just the last few weeks.

4. Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit.
Anyone with any marketing/advertising/video/PR experience can shoot thiry-seven holes in Huck's bullshit "explanation" in 1.3 seconds by using only their thumb and forefinger.

5. Got no problem with the "Merry Christmas" part of the ad
Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 10:36 PM by Bluzmann57
But at the end he says, "God Bless". He is obviously pandering to the alleged religious right to gain votes. It will likely work. But if he wins the Republican nomination, it will likely not work in the general election. And what's up with the cross in the ad? Bookcase my ass. It's a cross plain and simple.

6. The ad itself is bad enough
Why don't we just criticize the ad as divisive for a President, and forget the hocus pocus stuff. Why do we always step over the obvious to go for the conspiracy.

Surriussly... one of the freaks on TV actually asked this today. I didn't get it, unless it means Gomer is a 3-balled wonderboy.

16. The fundies may have found someone they can support
with Huckabee. That's fine. The GOP will now finally reap what they have sown. The GOP courted the fundies, they pandered to the fundies, they played along with the "culture wars", they did it all to get the fundies, all to the dismay of the moderate Republicans who also think the fundies are batshit crazy. Now the just might have a fundie as the GOP nominee and all that that implies.

If Huckabee gets the GOP nomination, the Dems win in a landslide. Creationism vs. evolution, geocentrism vs. heliocentrism (no, really!), abstinence, all of it will be up for debate next November. The great push back from the GOP will be complete.

All of them seem to approve of Shrub's unbridled spending, massive debt, foreign misadventures, nation-building, big government, and disdain for the law.

26. $6 Million
Raising $6 million dollars in one day suggests that paul is not dead. All of these subliminal messages when he talks just goes to show everyone that he's a double talking, lying, dirtbag, and that we will have to examine every syllable he utters, because he never means what he says.

The hullaballoo did get the Huckster plenty of free face time on the networks he can't afford to buy ad time for.

This was free time so he can focus the money on the early states, since for all his support in the polls he can't get anyone to donate to the cause. Kind of the free version of "get to know the candidate" ad campaign in places like florida and the super tuesday primaries. I'm guessing it's because even though people may want to vote for him they realize he will lose the general election, because he lies, and pardons criminals if they claim to find jesus.

Douchebag, best describes him.

25. cynicism pays
No political ad is sent out that is not parsed to see what message or potential message could be gleened from it. He knew there was a cross in the ad, he knew he would catch hell for it, he knew his base of voters would see it, fall for it, and support him even more, and he knew he would get tons of free air time talking about himself and his campaign.

That being said, Thou shalt not LIE.

It is insulting to christians to put it in the ad, and it is an insidious ploy to gain more face time and shore up your base, However I'm sure that's how Jesus would do it.

I smell a rove.

29. Huck scares the hell out of me...
I think it is good the pubs are scared too, and seem poised to bring him down because it is a very scary time. 45% of Americans think the earth is 10,000 years old, and I don't want this guy on the ballot. I noticed John McCain put a cross in his new Xmas ad...if that get him traction, then it is pretty depressing.

30. As defined it's not even close to being a Christian cross.

It's not even close, I'm sure any real Christian missed this subliminal message. If this is the best argument we can come up with to use against Huck we're toast. Making up stuff isn't going to work, I'm sorry it's hopeless. When I first heard about this on NPR I imagined a actual floating cross above one shoulder or the other. Imagine my surprise when the today show actually showed the commercial, there behind the "scrolling" background was a white book shelf. Nothing was floating anywhere much less a "floating" cross. Sure the dudes the enemy however.com making up shit for attention won't win us any points with Mr. and Mrs. America.
