Folks.. In Texas the Revolution has begun

In Texas...Democrats won a seat in the State House...in a solidly Republican district...

Remember...Tom Delay and his boys rewrote the maps...

District 97 has been Republican since the beginning of time....

Texas Dems and Progressives have proven it can be done...

35. Guess I could have read back and saved you answering that question twice.
In my district in Ca I've got Matsui, and the two main neighboring districts are Lungren and Dolittle, so it's my job as a good dem to find people running against them, and help.

18. We both have no Representation
It seems as tho our boat has been sinking for a long long time, but we can patch up those leaks and sail to smoother waters come '08.

I spoke to Granger's office after she voted NO on the SCHIP, and inquired about why she hated children. The aide told me that she didn't hate children but that there were parts in the bill that she didn't like. When I asked which part it was he told me the $70,000 a year family earnings. I told him if people making $70,000 and have hospital bills totaling over $100,000 or more that would wipe out their yearly salary. I also explained to him that Granger and her staff get all the socialized healthcare at taxpayers expensive. He told me that he had to pay for his own insurance.

I found a website that contradicted his account.

If you're interested in how much a staffer makes just click on the Salary Database and look for your Rep. Very interesting info.

Well it will be interesting to watch how things play out in '08. I join you in the finger crossing.

22. Texas is turning blue
My own boyfriend is self described as "conservative." He's very much pro 2nd amendment, he collects guns. He voted against Perry, though it was for Kinky. I railed on him for voting Kinky, and he is disgusted with Perry. And he's impressed by Obama so far. There's always a bright side.

It didn't happen in the next governor's election, but it's coming. Texas is going blue.

24. Yep, I agree
Sometimes when you hold your breath your first start off turning red, hold it long enough you will turn blue.

I think WE Texans have been holding our breaths long enough and now it's our turn to run things.

Time for the grownups to take control of the reins.

27. Indeed
But even long time republicans, like my parents, see how shitty Perry is. People want change in this state. I mean look, Perry got 30-something% of the vote last time. He didn't even get a majority. BTW, just because I haven't said this in a while fuck Kinky & Strayhorn.

I can't see that happening. Don't get me wrong, of course I'd love to see another Jim Wright or Pete Geren, but I just don't think that could happen with the demographics as they currently are. :(

30. A sign of the future?
From BOR

House District 97 was not drawn to be a Democratic seat. In 2006, Barrett had taken on the recently retired Anna Mowery and claimed only 40.82% of the vote. Tarrant County on the whole only gave Barbara Radnofsky, the U.S. Senate nominee, 34.80%, Chris Bell 31.07% in his bid for Governor, and the bell weather Texas Supreme Court candidate Bill Moody 42.79% of the vote. The Republican's should have won this election based on the poor democratic performance index (DPI) of the district alone. During the special election yesterday, Barrett won with 52.2% of the vote.

In addition, Barrett was dramatically out spent. According to the 8 day out reports, Mark Shelton spent over $100,000 and raised (and presumably spent) another $10,000 from TexPAC before the election. Barrett on the other hand spent a little over $45,000 according to his 8 day report. Again, according to his telegram reports, raised an additional $4,000 in the final week of the election from Texas Parent PAC and two individuals.

Breaking it down, that means Barrett spent $9.13 per vote compared to about $23.40 per vote for Shelton.

This election was about more than money and numbers, though. Mark Shelton was a pawn for Tom Craddick and his corrupt pay to play model, and Dan Barrett's campaign never let voters forget it. Craddick's failed leadership in the people's House is why TexBlog PAC, the Texas Progressive Alliance, ParentPAC, the Texas League of Conservation Voters, the Fort Worth Star Telegram, and many many many others all endorsed Barrett.

I also know that one of the field organizers sent by the DNC to Texas as part of the 50-State Strategy has spent the last few weeks working on this race, so let me add Thank You Howard Dean!
